Complementary Hebrew Scripture from The Twelve Prophets: Zechariah 14:10-21

The whole land shall be turned into a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem. But Jerusalem shall remain aloft on its site from the Gate of Benjamin to the place of the former gate, to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the king's wine presses. And it shall be inhabited, for never again shall it be doomed to destruction; Jerusalem shall abide in security.

This shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the peoples that wage war against Jerusalem: their flesh shall rot while they are still on their feet; their eyes shall rot in their sockets, and their tongues shall rot in their mouths. On that day a great panic from the Lord shall fall on them, so that each will seize the hand of a neighbor, and the hand of the one will be raised against the hand of the other; even Judah will fight at Jerusalem. And the wealth of all the surrounding nations shall be collected—gold, silver, and garments in great abundance. And a plague like this plague shall fall on the horses, the mules, the camels, the donkeys, and whatever animals may be in those camps.

Then all who survive of the nations that have come against Jerusalem shall go up year after year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the festival of booths. If any of the families of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, there will be no rain upon them. And if the family of Egypt do not go up and present themselves, then on them shall come the plague that the Lord inflicts on the nations that do not go up to keep the festival of booths. Such shall be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not go up to keep the festival of booths.

On that day there shall be inscribed on the bells of the horses, “Holy to the Lord.” And the cooking pots in the house of the Lord shall be as holy as the bowls in front of the altar; and every cooking pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be sacred to the Lord of hosts, so that all who sacrifice may come and use them to boil the flesh of the sacrifice. And there shall no longer be traders in the house of the Lord of hosts on that day.

Complementary Psalm 66:1-9

Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth;  sing the glory of his name;  give to him glorious praise. Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!  Because of your great power, your enemies cringe before you. All the earth worships you;  they sing praises to you,  sing praises to your name.”

Come and see what God has done:  he is awesome in his deeds among mortals. He turned the sea into dry land;  they passed through the river on foot. There we rejoiced in him,  who rules by his might forever, whose eyes keep watch on the nations—  let the rebellious not exalt themselves.

Bless our God, O peoples,  let the sound of his praise be heard, who has kept us among the living,  and has not let our feet slip.

Semi-continuous Psalm 30

I will extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up,  and did not let my foes rejoice over me. O Lord my God, I cried to you for help,  and you have healed me. O Lord, you brought up my soul from Sheol,  restored me to life from among those gone down to the Pit.

Sing praises to the Lord, O you his faithful ones,  and give thanks to his holy name. For his anger is but for a moment;  his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may linger for the night,  but joy comes with the morning.

As for me, I said in my prosperity,  “I shall never be moved.” By your favor, O Lord,  you had established me as a strong mountain; you hid your face; I was dismayed.

To you, O Lord, I cried,  and to the Lord I made supplication: “What profit is there in my death,  if I go down to the Pit? Will the dust praise you?  Will it tell of your faithfulness? Hear, O Lord, and be gracious to me!  O Lord, be my helper!”

You have turned my mourning into dancing;  you have taken off my sackcloth  and clothed me with joy, so that my soul may praise you and not be silent.  O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever.

New Testament Gospel Lesson: Luke 9:1-6

There are parallel passages at Matthew 10:1, 5-15 and Mark 6:7-13.

Then Jesus called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. He said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money—not even an extra tunic. Whatever house you enter, stay there, and leave from there. Wherever they do not welcome you, as you are leaving that town shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” They departed and went through the villages, bringing the good news and curing diseases everywhere.
