we’re up at the lake— the real lake, not the little quarry my parents live on. it’s rainy and cool, so no boating, but we’re having a delightful time with my extended family. there are 22 of us ranging from 2 months to 80 years old. dean and i are out on the porch reading and the rest of the gang are inside playing some game that involves yelling and merriment. here’s cozy dean in the hammock:
and here are the two of us:
and here’s the lake with the mellow soporific soundtrack of rain on the leaves:

Culver Top Movies List
Phil’s bit: Having caught up with so much music through the pandemic, in the second half of this year I’ve moved my focus over onto movies. Like anyone, I like movies, but I concentrate so hard on music that I don’t get to see anywhere near enough of them (first ever viewings this week, for instance, include the likes of both the OG Terminator & Die Hard, although generally my tastes often waver between the unlikely twin peaks of low brow comedies & arthouse fare).
I asked a couple of film-watching buddies for suggestions & this is the first of them, c/o Lee Stokoe aka Culver (also delve way back through this blog to find a music-centred interview with him from about 15 years ago). Varied stuff, although the general emphasis here is probably a bit different to my own! Over to Lee...
If I had to compile a balanced (not all Argento + Fulci) list of a kind of "representative" top 10:
Suspiria [OG]
City of the Living Dead
Xtro
Silip: Daughters of Eve
Shivers
Texas Chainsaw Massacre [OG]
Friday the 13th
The Turin Horse
Unwilling Lovers
Buio Omega/Beyond the Darkness
Should be in there but aren't for some reason:
Mad Max/Mad Max 2
Bonus Duo:
Confessions of a Pop Performer
The Fiend
But really, how do you narrow it down that much... there are no Leone westerns in there for a start... no Hammer, no Pete Walker, Jess Franco, Jean Rollin, Norman Warren...
