Vulgar Latin was the everyday spoken language of the Roman Empire. Over time, it branched off into multiple distinct tongues—most notably Italian, Spanish, and French. These are known as the Romance languages. French is often considered the "least Latin" of the three, containing a heavier influence from Celtic and German roots. For English speakers, French pronunciations can be somewhat perplexing; as a general baseline, final consonants in French are silent. Parler is "par-lay" and trois is "twah". Furthermore, over the course of one thousand years, we observe that the original “oy” sound, as found in the word in “boy”, drifted to “way” and then finally, “wah.” Additionally, a particularly interesting phenomenon is how English speakers have appropriated the term je ne sais quoi, which translates literally to ”I don't know what.” That is to say: nothing becomes something. Speaking of art, French writers in the 1600s (like Montesquieu and the idiom's pioneers) used this concept to describe aesthetics. They argued that true beauty or art couldn't just be measured with math or symmetry. If we look at a painting, it is the property of all those parts—brushstrokes, pigment, and canvas, combining. There was a hidden, magical element that made a painting or a person captivating—a je ne sais quoi. In English, it functions strictly as a singular, mass noun used only to describe this abstract, intangible magnetism. This borrowed term succeeds because the direct translation may feel too blunt to capture the desired feeling. It is not simply a blank space. Whereas a French speaker might use this same set of words to describe a physical mystery—like the secret ingredient in a barbecue sauce or an odd tool used for home maintenance—in English is it never used it as a verb or to describe a mechanical, solvable problem. When you say, "She has a certain je ne sais quoi," you are saying she has an attractive quality that defies categorization. It’s not just that she is pretty or smart—it's the way those traits collide to create an intoxicating aura. Another example: "The new hotel has a certain je ne sais quoi that makes you want to linger in the lobby for hours." In this context, it is highly effective for describing an atmospheric vibe or design aesthetic that is hard to pin down. It can even be used to describe the tension between two opposing forces. Equally, if your “I don’t know” connotes a lack of wisdom or correctness, you may find yourself accused of spreading a canard, which in English translates to “duck”.
