Photos are of an Atlantic hagfish, and a sixgill hagfish, respectively. Hagfish are the only known animals to have a skull while not having a vertebral column. They are one of two living groups of jawless fish, the other being lampreys.

🌿 Species: Eastern Red Bat (Lasiurus borealis)

📝 Notes: Small tree-roosting bat commonly found in forest edges, clearings, and suburban areas with tree cover. Recognized by its reddish-orange fur and furred tail membrane. Often solitary or found roosting in foliage rather than caves or buildings.

Typically active at dusk, feeding on flying insects such as moths, beetles, and other nocturnal invertebrates. May be observed in flight at twilight or roosting camouflaged among leaves during the day.

This specimen was dead upon discovery.

Fat Echidna found on Woppa (they do inhabit the island as well as the mainland).

Sadly, while driving to Yeppoon, we saw a lot of dead echidnas on the road... The highway is frequently covered in native animal roadkill. At least on Woppa, there's little chance of an echidna being runover.

BTW, despite looking like hedgehogs, they're very much unrelated. Echidnas are their own thing (closely related to the platypus).
