âWe need to talk,â Ellinor huffs as soon as Avery opens the door to their shared apartment. She crosses her armsânot that she needs to; the tone in her voice alone has him raising his eyebrows and throwing his hands up in feigned defense.
He kicks the door closed behind him and tosses his keys into the dish on the counter. âWhat did I do this time?â
She narrows her eyes at him, crossing her arms. âPastry delivery this morning.â
He knows what she means. She can tell. Because he goes from being defensive to being completely and utterly pleased with himself, a shit-eating grin spreading over his face before he even answers.
This was all his fucking plan, she thinks.
Earlier that day, sheâd gone in for her shift at the cafeâher one opening shift of the week, because sheâd probably die if she did more than that. Clocked in. Started brewing the coffees, grinding the espresso. At 6 a.m. sharp, the back door buzzer soundedâAvery, sheâd figured, here to deliver the daily pastry and bagel order from the bakery across the street. The bakery Caridad Lacanilao owned. Caridadâs bakery. The bakery owned by Caridad, who Avery worked for. Caridad, she thought wistfully before shaking her head abruptly. Avery always delivered the pastries in the morning, and he always gave her shit if she didnât let him in quickly. So she wiped her hands off on the apron loosely tied over her flannel top, flipped off the coffee grinder, and headed out for the back door.
And when sheâd opened it, it was not Avery, but Caridad Lacanilao standing there.
âThat was not cool!â she huffs to Avery, still crossing her arms. âYou were supposed toâI didnât knowâI wasnât expectingââ
âCalm down!â He smirks at her. Itâs infuriating. âI thought youâd be glad to know that it was her idea.â
She sputters. âHerâwhat?â
âYeah. Iâd already boxed up the pastries and stuff, and I was about to head out when she told me to start getting the baguettes in the oven. Which she usually does herself. So she definitely just wanted to go flirt with you.â He wiggles his eyebrows playfully.
Of course he does. This is all just hilarious to him.
âWell she didnât,â Ellinor grumbles. âFlirt with me, I mean.â
âCome on, Ellââ
âIâm serious! There was no flirting! I opened the fucking door and she was like âhi,â and I said âoh.ââ She throws her hands up in the air. âLiterally just âoh.â Like an idiot. I couldnât make this up.â
âItâs not like you guys havenât had normal conversations before.â Sensing that sheâs no longer...hostile...he kicks his shoes off and hangs his jacket on the hook by the door.
Shr shrugs. âI know. But it takes...so long to get to that point. I always say something dumb or awkward. Like âoh.â And sheâs probably like, âI have so many better things I could be doing than talking to this loserâââ
âShe would never think that.â
âHow would you know?â
âBecause I work with her?â he says. âAnd sheâs always asking how youâre doing or talking about how she might go across the street for a latte if the shop gets slow.â
Ellinor perks up. âReally?â
âYes!â Avery says, rolling his eyes. âSeriously. You guys are so weird about this whole thing, I donât know why you canât just see that the other is interestedââ
âSheâs not interested!â she insists. âI mean, not like...not like that. Iâm sure sheâs just like, âoh, thatâs Ellinor, my employees sister, who I could definitely see as a friend but nothing more thanâââ
âStop putting words in her mouth, Ell.â He sighs, flopping down on the couch. âYouâre just speculating because youâre afraid.â
âIâm not afraid. I saw her this morning.â
âYeah, and from the little bit that you told me, it seems like that went just great.â
She doesnât even bother telling him about how she could barely get her words straight when she offered Caridad a coffee, or about how she literally dropped two bagels on the floor by accident stocking the pastry case while said coffee was brewing and Caridad was standing idly waiting for it.
âIt was. Fine.â
âLook at me.â
âNo,â she mumbles, but he wonât relent.
âEll. Look me in the eye and tell me youâre really okay with just seeing Caridad a couple times a week at the cafe or bakery or maybe when all three of us hang out.â
She tilts her head back and forth indecisively, and Avery sighs.
âOne of you has to make a move eventually.â
âWell itâs not going to be me,â she says decisively, tossing her phone onto the coffee table before heading into the bathroom.
Deep breaths, Ellinor, she thinks, closing the door behind her. Itâs not like her to get so flustered about anything, really, but Caridad was another story. She splashes some water on her face and pats a towel over her cheeks, taking one final deep breath before emerging.
âYou good?â Avery snorts, and she rolls her eyes at him.
âIâm fine.â She sits down next to him on the sofa, picking up her phone from where sheâd left it only to find a text waiting for her on her lock screen.
Caridad
Yeah, that would be cool
She almost drops her phone from how quickly she tries to swipe it open. âWhat theâŚâ Inside is a text from her that was very obviously not written by her.
Hi Caridad! Avery told me youâre taking the day off tomorrow. Iâm off too! Would you want to get boba together?
âAvery,â she breathes.
âMmhmmmm?â
âWhat have you done?â
âYou said you werenât going to make a move. So I made a move for you.â
âAveryââ
âI know youâre off tomorrow. And I know you didnât have any plans. But now you do!â
âIâm going to kill you,â she says, her heart racing. âIâm going toâoh my god, I have to tell her I canât. This was a mistake.â
âBut she already said yes!â
Oh my god. She said yes.
She groans and falls back into the couch cushions. âFuck. Youâre right.â

She stands outside the boba shop, shifting her weight from foot to foot. This was a bad idea. Caridad isnât even here yet. Granted, she made sure to get to the boba shop exactly 15 minutes early. She even woke up early for this. Sheâd agreed to meet with Caridad at 1, but she woke up at 10, showered, changed into ripped denim shorts with tights and about eight different flannel shirts before deciding on a red one. And she put on makeup for this. And a matching red knit beanie. And all of that only took until 11. Which means she had two extra hours to pace around her apartment anxiously before heading out.
Sheâd hung out with Caridad alone only two times before this, and both were months ago. The first time was one night when theyâd happened to close the cafe and bakery at the same time and ran into each other in the street, and Caridad mentioned that she was going to go get ramen, and Ellinor had stupidly said oh, me too! She was not, in fact, going to go get ramen after work. Or at least, she wasnât until her brain decided to make up something stupid just to be able to hang out with Caridad. But Caridad had said oh, we could um. Go together. So it worked. In a way. And they got ramen. And it was awkward at first, but after a few glasses of sake it was decidedly less awkward, and they ended up staying and chatting until the restaurant was closing. The other time, theyâd planned to go see a movie with Avery only for Avery to bail at the last minute. Ellinor hadnât thought much of it then (she sure does now), but she and Caridad had gone together anyway. And it was nice. And their fingers had brushed together every time theyâd reached for popcorn at the same time, which was...several times. And after the movie, theyâd walked the long way home. Neither of them suggested it. But their feet seemed to carry them blocks away from the more direct route to their neighborhood, and theyâd chatted together in the quiet street-lit sidewalks until finally it seemed like the only place left to go was home.
But anyway. Both of those times were months ago, and even though Ellinor had been convinced that they couldâve had something then, sheâs all but lost hope by now. And yet thanks to Avery, here she was, standing outside the boba shop looking like an idiot waiting for Caridad.
Thatâs if she doesnât end up deciding this is a bad idea.
âEllinor?â
She turns sharply only to find her standing there, and for a second, she doesnât even know what to say.
These days, if she sees her at all, itâs usually in her standard bakerâs jacket and black pants, black hair tied back into a bun or ponytail. Not this time. Today, Caridad is dressed in ripped gray skinny jeans and an off-the-shoulder red top, her hair loose and long and flowing past her bare shoulders. Oh good, she wore makeup too, Ellinor thinks, noting Caridadâs cherry red lipstick and smokey eye combination. It wouldâve been weird if only I wore⌠She shakes her head. Stop being stupid. Say something.
âHey,â she says nervously. âUh. Our red shirts match.â
Caridad flashes an awkward smile. âHa. Yeah. They do.â
You fucking idiot, Ellinor, she thinks.
They stare at each other until another customer steps out of the boba shop and walks right between them out onto the sidewalk.
âOh. Right.â Ellinor opens the door for them. âUh. After you.â
Caridad steps inside, her heeled boots clicking gently on the floor. âWhat are you going to get?â she asks her, and Ellinor blushes.
âOolong.â
âOh! Yeah. Me too.â
Ellinorâs eyes widen.
âItâs my favorite,â Caridad clarifies.
âYeah, me too.â
She manages to order her tea without making too much of an embarrassment of herself, and they make their way out of the shop.
âDo you want to go to the park?â Caridad asks quickly. âI mean, unless you wanted to go somewhere else. I donât care.â
âNo! The park isâthe park would be nice.â
With her heels on, Caridad is only just taller than Ellinor. She glances at her shyly as they walk together. Weâre probably the same height, she figures, because from where she stands, she can see the way her cheeks redden in the early spring cold, and the way her eyelashes flutter when she catches Ellinor looking at her.
Oops.
The park is surprisingly quiet when they arrive. They sip their boba in silence, walking around the gardens and the fountains that had only just thawed from the winter weather.
âNothing. I mean. This is where...isnât this where we walked around after the movies, that one time?â
If Caridadâs face was flushed before, itâs really red now. âOh,â she says hurriedly. âYeah. I guess so.â
I guess so.
Ellinorâs heart sinks. It probably doesnât matter as much to her. âYeah, I only just remembered. That was. Uh. Fun.â
âYeah,â Caridad mumbles. âIt was.â
Despite her discouragement, Averyâs voice rings in her ears. One of you has to make a move eventually.
Ugh. Heâs right, even if she wouldnât admit it to his face. And if she doesnât say something now, sheâll probably regret it.
Definitely regret it.
âHey, Caridad.â
Her eyes snap up from where sheâd been looking at her boots, meeting Ellinorâs gaze. âYeah?â
âWhat...um. What happened, after that night?â She swallows. âI mean, I thought weâd had a really nice time. Iâd hoped that maybe we couldâve hung out again sometime, but Iâwell, maybe itâs me, I was too scared to ask you, but I did think it was fun and I sort of wished weâd hung out again but you never said anything so I sort of assumed you probably did want to but I did want to and...oh fuck, now Iâm babbling, andââ
âYou did?â Caridad asks in a small voice.
âDid what?â Ellinor squeaks.
âYouâyou did want to hang out with me again?â
âW-wellâyeah! I mean. Yeah, I did. I just didnât think you were interested because youâre so. Cool. And stuff. But I thought...that weâd really had fun that night. Andââ
Ellinor takes a deep breath, considering this. âSo, did you...suggest coming to the park on purpose?â
Caridad looks back downward. âYeah.â
Oh.
She looks up. âCaridad.â
âYes?â
Clutching her boba in her hands, she takes a single step closer to her, tilts her head up, and kisses her cheek.
âOh,â Caridad whispers, and she looks into Ellinorâs eyes, blushing, surprised, but smiling. Just a little.
But a little is enough.
The next time Ellinor leans in, she meets her lips in a full kiss, soft and careful and tasting like sweetened oolong tea. Ellinor wonders if her red lipstick will rub off on her. She hopes it does.
âThat wasâŚâ she breathes when Caridad pulls away. âNice.â
Caridad smiles, bringing the straw from her boba to her mouth. âIt was nice.â

The rules are as follows. Go to page 7 (or paragraph 7, if not that long) of your WIP then go to the 7th line, share 7 lines and tag 7 more writers to continue the challenge.
ok so not actually tagged by the lovely and talented @maydei but this sounded like such a neat idea that I wanted to do it so I stole borrowed it <3
A little preview from somewhere in the middle-ish of my SebHawke fic, Very little, as apparently big things start happening on page 7. o.o
âNo admittance, ser. Donât even know how you got this far. On your way now.â
He hears Varric chuckle behind him. His own smile is cooler, what he imagines regal authority to be. He thinks of his father and the way he held his head.
âGentlemen. You are to be applauded for doing your duty so admirably. Your loyalty will be remembered. But right now, you are denying entry to the rightful Prince of Starkhaven, so I would suggest you step aside.â
âMight even consider running to tell someone,â Hawke offers over his shoulder.
