Is it ethical to keep chickens with severe cross beak? Do they have a good quality of life if they can’t do normal chicken things like eat on their own, hunt bugs, and preen?
They can still run around and explore, dust bathe, assert themselves in the pecking order, and enjoy a good sunbeam.
It depends on the chicken not every severe cross beak is going to struggle the same. Some birds may look severe but get on perfectly fine while some birds with minor cross beak struggle more. Its a skull deformity so it can have implications to the birds overall functions.
Its true you should bathe and preen your crossbeak since they cant do it themselves but your work is lessened if they have a friend with a normal beak who can help keep them clean. Plenty of chickens genuinely enjoy taking a warm bath and crossbeaks get bathed often.
A lot of cross beaks dont need to be tubed or force fed, some eat on their own via moistened feed from a deep dish instead but also helping a cross beak eat is something the bird is typically used to and if the owner is tubing them then feeding times are quick and easy.
A crossbeak can still scratch and play. They are just special needs chickens and should be housed with gentle birds if being housed outside. An owner of a cross beak needs to be prepared to help the bird eat and help them stay clean but other than that they can be pretty happy healthy chickens.
That being said it's unethical for someone to care for a cross beak if they aren't putting the work in but cross beaks can quite different in the severity of their disability.
