Review: Say Something by Creative Touch
Summary: Hermione Granger. Wasn't she meant to be Ron's girlfriend or something? Weren't they meant to have the fairy-tale ending? She was surely more a sister than a lover, right? That's what Fred Weasley thought before realising five years of his life were erased from his memory – five years of his life that was spent with her. Rated M for the brief smut that may entail in future.

Review:I don’t often go out of my way to read amnesia/memory-loss fics, but this was a Fremione story, so of course I made an exception. In some ways this trope is always slightly outrageous (especially if you’ve seen just how often they’re used in Asian dramas), but Creative Touch makes great strides in adding her own touches.
When I first started this story, I anticipated a “two steps forward, one step back” approach to Fred’s memory loss. However, this wasn’t the case and I was surprised by how the author seemed to add nuances to the characters and the plot. In some way the story can feel frustrating, because the reader learns the information as Fred learns it – and it often feels like the information isn’t coming fast enough.
For me, there was also a growing level of apprehension – arising from Fred’s continual blurring between sympathetic and unlikable character. In many ways, he acts like a spoiled brat, and his refusal to give Hermione a fair chance and his unwillingness to let Angelina go makes it hard for the reader to sympathize with him. However, you can also understand his frustration – five years of information are meticulously revealed to him in small bits, and it’s hard to display affection for a person when we forget why we fell for them in the first place.
In Fred and Hermione’s story, we see the emotional complexity that goes into a relationship torn apart by memory loss. How can our partner forget about their love for us? Will their love ever recover and become what it once was? Is it ever okay to give up on your partner? Say Something addresses these issues in a way that isn’t shallow but also not so deep that it becomes unrealistic. Now, if only the author were to update the fic…
