Many things have been learned throughout the 12 weeks that made up semester one in the course of Animation. Designing a world is truly no easy feat, and not something one should do entirely on their own. There are times trying to make a world solo in the past were made, but it was never successful, as there is too much to think about for one individual. Teamwork, as has been learned over the last 12 weeks, is essential for every aspect of creating a world, from making the environment, to the characters, the colours, games, storylines - just absolutely everything.

This semester did provide this one with plenty of opportunities to be creative, as that is what is greatly required to create a fictional world that could be used in either a movie, game, cartoon series etc. Concept drawings, a personal favourite, are very important in the development of a world, its environment, and the characters that inhabit that world. It has given one plenty of opportunities to experiment with a wide range of media, both traditional and digital, even with media never experimented with before, which was a great and enjoyable learning curve, and will again happily use in the future for both personal and course related content.

As for creating different aspects of that world, not all caught the interest of this one. The enthusiasm lies mostly in designing characters, which is considered to this one a personal strength; have been drawing characters since childhood - it is somewhat of a passion and a fun pass time. Some parts not too interesting were environmental drawings. It is not something this one cares for too much, to be honest, though, of courses, it was worth experimenting with. It just wasn't the most fun thing to do. And, in this one's opinion, animatics and opening sequenced aren't too enjoyable either. Video editing is not within this one's strengths, and is, at least in this one's opinion, ridiculously stressful. Would happily never want to touch that specific area in animation again.

Teamwork felt like an up and downhill experience. There were those who we mix well with, and others we don't. There are times this one has not put in enough effort, this one can admit, but have also seen times where others, whether in the same group or not, could have done more too. It is, to be honest, a tricky situation to talk about, as this one has learned other  have different views on how they and others either in or not in their team perform in terms of effective teamwork. It was tedious for this one, and often socially straining, but it was doable, and this one was able to communicate effectively at times with the many teammates over the duration of Creative Elements One, which is a big relief; honestly, it was scary for this one at times, but it was certainly a good and worthwhile experience.

This is the grand presentation - the one I and my team will be marked on. I put a lot of effort putting the presentation together - and my teammates helped out in formatting the essay and adding in only what was required, as I at times put in too much or too little content for different sections of the slide.

The presentation itself went very well in my opinion. Of course we were all nervous, but team effort was good - if anyone faltered when they spoke, another of us jumped in to carry on and continue. The time limit for the presentation was meant to be 15 minuted, but seriously, with the amount of content my group and other groups had in presentations, 15 minutes, in my opinion, wasn’t really enough time, so many went over that limit.

I did a bit of research on motion graphics (although I have made one before for a previous class) just to get inspiration on what sorts of transitions and effects we could achieve just with basic images and graphics.

I liked how this intro sequence used simple images but followed the motion of each element to create a motion that carried the viewer through it.

Ultimately, the plan we originally had for our sequence proved to be a bit too ambitious to execute in the time we had. We had to make a few sacrifices and work around some setbacks (like failing to save our work in After Effects and having our images lost) but here is what we ended up with in the end.

We all met up yesterday to push forward our project.

Turns out Eve, Rhea and Jonny all arrived into Uni before me, and have come up with a game concept that sounded like it could really work.

The game is in a format of a board game, and the board is made up of environments the the gods playing can morph at will and use elements and creatures to fight. This idea was gained from the cartoon Adventure Time, when Finn and Jake play a game called Card Wars. We thought of the idea of tarot cards for the cards that display the creatures, which I see as a possible play on superstition and the supernatural, as Hell is associated with demons and everything evil and nasty.

There have been rough drawings made by Rhea on what the game looks like, and I made a fuller, more explained drawing on it, which I will post in a picture post along with the other drawings I did yesterday, which were tarot card experiments with the Lust Spider, Treachery Wolf and the big red Demon.

Tuesday 24th November marked the beginning of week 10, and after all the groups presented their title sequences, Conánn had everyone stand at the front of class to allocate everyone into fresh, new groups.

We have been moved to work on the Hell World...and make a game that the characters that inhabit the world can play. That’s right. A game for the world’s inhabitants to play.

I was initially excited to work on this. I like games, and I like characters. So, it will be easy, right? ...Nope.

We did have initial concepts that were based around the creatures that live throughout all of Hell’s 9 circles, and well, they were fun to discuss, as the ideas we came up with when we met up on Thursday were just so non-serious and fun to talk about.

We came up with concepts of big demons and gods playing with...pink fluffy unicorns? Making them race across a table? Sounds silly, yes? But why not? It’s all good fun. Mind you, this is all of us coming up with initial ideas, and before anyone thought to conduct research.

On the Friday of Week 10, we tried to come up with more serious ideas for games, discussing board games, dice games etc., but honestly, we were all too tired to come up with anything. We were all drained and in need of a rest.

I told myself to do work over the weekend, which I will discuss in a future post.
