Controversial Solas opinions: REDEEM HIM
Okay so from my perspective Solas (from what we actually see of him in game) is one of the most careful, considerate, thoughtful, soft spoken people in the game. He is the only companion that will approve of ANY action to help those in need regardless of race or belief. He is the only companion that provides well thought out arguments for his beliefs. He is the only companion that does not get angry if you defy their wishes in their personal quest. He believes ardently in free will.
He did NOT create the veil simply to trap bothersome gods. He tells us that if he had not, the world would have been destroyed! Cole says 'He locked away the dreams to stop the old dreams from waking. The wolf chews off its leg to escape the trap."
I think it's pretty obvious that the veil was created not just to stop the evanuris being dicks... but to prevent a cataclysm, personally I believe to contain the blight.
But the world post veil is broken. Chaotic. Half of the living beings in the world (because spirits are intelligent and sentient people!) Suffer death and corruption, slavery, cut off from reality. The blight is breaking through (something I rather doubt will end with the death of the last archdemon). The titans slumber, cut off from the fade, the dwarves are cut off from parts of themselves... keep in mind that with the realm of spirits suffering and misunderstood... that is half of the world suffering, most of the fade controlled by spirits of rage fear despair and hunger.
The world has lost its dreams.
He never says that everyone will die. He says the world will burn in raw chaos. Because they treat spirits as nothing and then they will be among them. Because there will be far more mages. Because political systems built around suffering and falsehoods will break and not bend in front of the reality. Most political systems in thedas are built on slavery of people who will become mages, oppression of spirits, intolerance of demons... these systems won't survive. But how many millions suffer and die in these systems? Sometimes, to make things better, you can't simply close your eyes to suffering and refuse to change. The world needs to return to its natural state.
Solas does not need to be redeemed, he needs to be found. He needs to be understood. He needs to be supported. I do not see hubris. I see desperation. Horror at the loss of the orb. Of what he is now forced to do. He is the Shepherd and he is lost.
As Felassan says. "I have stood in the middle of a wildfire, and I have seen the world change."
