At a midway point in a 7-8 hour drive, but look! Cows!
Hi! Happy birthday!!
I could talk about my cat all day, but let's have cows instead! The lady in the foreground is of the Abondance breed, and the one in the middle ground is a Tarentaise (also called Tarine). These breeds originate from the french Alps, in the valleys of the same names. They are "rustic" breeds, able to graze the high pastures of the Alps in the summer. (The white peaks in the background is la chaîne du Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps!)
A cow of these breeds produces about 5000 kg of milk per year on average. This milk is rich in fat and protein, which makes it perfect for making regional cheeses such as Beaufort, Reblochon, or tomme d'Abondance. Some cheeses, like Beaufort, have a "summer" version made entirely from summer milk collected from cows in those high pastures . Because the flora up there is so different, the cheese has a different taste!
Hi friend! Thank you for the good wishes and the fantastic photo and facts! I am extremely pleased to learn about these delightful cow breeds and their season-specific cheese!
Question: have you tried the summer cheese alongside the regular cheese and if so can you taste the difference? Wait, I know your job involves cows but does it also involve cheese tasting???
Also, the photo is displaying properly now, but I need you to know that this is what happened when I went into my inbox on mobile:
Not sensitive or abusive cows!! Gasp! 🤣
Anyway, thank you again for this supremely lovely message.
I COME BEARING COWS. MURRAY GREY COWS
They're not my cows, they're my friend's cows, but they are a) beautiful and b) kicking ASS at the Show. (Figurative kicking; I think literal kicking would get them disqualified.)
The top picture is a heifer named Rose and a bull named (wait for it) TRADEMARK.
The bottom picture is a cow named Seraphina.
look at the cute bookmarks I got....

Forever one of my favorite moments of the Queen!
This is Mossycobblestone (yes that’s her name) the mooshroom. I spent two weeks painting her, and I love her very much.
