This is my most recent piece. I need help with the lighting, which the main source is coming from a small, soft lamp, indicated by the grey circle.
Let’s have a look! It seems your style is rather simple in terms of anatomical volumes. So shading it should be rather simple. But of course, shading something that is only lit from the back can be a bit tricky, given how a good amount of the character would have to be rendered in shadow.
It can seem a little overwhelming in the beginning ( panel 2 ), but with his back to the source - there’s not much light spilling in over him, save for the exception of some of his larger volumes, such as his pectorals ( panel 3 ). I added a slight highlight following the midsection of his abs, as it would be a shame to keep those hidden, and the lamps position -just- allowed for the abstraction. If you look closely at panel 2, you can see that I've started out by lining the “edge” of the shadows directly on top of the character ( most visible at the left leg ). This kind of rough but solid beginning step can help you get started on mapping out your shadows. Although, since your anatomy didn’t show too many details, i went on and mapped the light out in bigger chunks/ or blocks, which is why you don’t see much detail in the final panel.
