Abandoned Corn Crib - August 2021 This abandoned corn crib was located near Starved Rock State Park. I find that there is something special about abandoned farm buildings. They speak of times past and of older ways of farming. Also, they make very good images. Many people do not know what a corn crib actually is. Before the days of combines, corn was harvested by hand and the outer layers of leaves were “shucked” off. Then the corn, still on the cob, was stored in a building that allowed air to freely flow around the corn. Since that limited the size of the storage area, small barns with storage areas– cribs– were developed. The tractor or other equipment was kept in the center and the corn was kept in the cribs. Throughout the winter the farmer would withdraw corn from the cribs to feed his hogs or cattle. With modern combines, the corn is separated from the cob and eventually stored in a steel silo with heated forced air. The cob, along with the leaves and stalk of the plant, are chopped up and exhausted out the back of the combine. MWM
