jo (he/him) is a butch lesbian and he has lived in core, west virginia, for his entire life. he started working at the auto shop when he was sixteen and everyone Knew that he was going to inherit it, and then when he was in his late 20s the previous owner retired and passed it on to him. i think there's probably a real name, like "core auto shop" or whatever, but everyone just calls it jo's place. (that's the name of this irm in my head btw. jo's place.)

when jo meets mira he's in his mid 40s, has been running the garage for nearly twenty years. and the thing about jo is that he knows everyone, not just in core but in the area. jo knows bees, the mute farmer who comes to sell things. jo knows quinns, who works at the grocery/general store in town. when mira lemma, lost and confused, arrives at jo's place, he makes a point of making sure she talks to ji-eun because she knows they'd get along. jo understands people. jo gets it.
