Soooooooo, this happened last night!! I was sidling up to the hotel bar to get drinks, when I saw the Delightful and Hilarious Sandra Valls, the MC for Creating Change 2023 and a fantastic standup comic, who immediately asked if she knew me! And, while this question is one I get asked a lot in queer spaces like this, I knew she knew me from an entirely different part of my life!! Sandra was a regular performer when I was the showroom manager at The Hollywood Improv, before I transitioned!!! So of course I said a very empathetic YES to the moment! While I was here in SF, I very randomly got to have drinks and dinner with my delightful friend Kevin! We haven’t seen each other in over a decade, when I had first moved back to Northampton in 2009ish, but it seems Eris decided it was time to rectify that!! Okay, it’s a little blurry, but when my friend Jen and I hang out, we tend to be in constant, competitive, conversation and, for that matter, motion. (In The best possible way!) So, before I found myself at a disconcertingly dissonant (but fun!) Queer Country Dance Party late last night; I spent the earlier part of the evening hanging out with this awesome human!!!!! Mel is the partner of an old friend of mine, who is out of town right now, and was down to have dinner, drinks, and some fantastic conversation with me!! And honestly it was a wonderful time!!!! I enjoy being the spectator/adventurer/stranger writing and recording my thoughts in all these interesting places. Sharing them with you. But it is always nice to be able to simply connect with someone. Dive into a really good conversation. Get to know someone. (However much we can ever really know anyone.) I’ve been lucky enough to have had this experience a couple times on this trip, but mostly it was at the big Queer con in SF. I’m so glad to have made a new, very cool friend here in Austin though!! I suppose it should be no surprise that it was with a cool queer!! And I’m so glad they are the partner of such a fine old friend, as well! It was definitely one of the highlights of the trip! (Also, Full Circle Bar is a really f**king cool place!!! And if you’re in Austin, you should definitely go there!! Tell Mel and Cooper I said hi!!!
