ManRay is back! And so, so am I! ManRay was my home Goth Club wayyyyyyyyy back when I was a club kid in the 90s. I worked at other clubs. Did lights and danced at Venus and the other clubs on Landsdowne. Prize Boy and bouncer at Nick’s Comedy Stop. Hung out and posed at all the clubs owned by the two big entities that owned those clubs in Boston. But ManRay, it’s own little island in the old, dirty Central Square, in Cambridge, was where I went to be with my people. ManRay was where I could just let myself go, dancing onstage in my spot next to Percy, lost in the music and the light-broken-dark. I explored my gender at ManRay. Used the women’s restroom for the first time, in forays as the woman I would one day be all the time (carefully, with a girl goth friend or lover as an escort/protector). ManRay was where I first encountered fetish and kink! And eventually I moved on, lived a myriad of lives. Called other Goth Clubs home. (Love to the recently closed Neo in Chicago!) And eventually ManRay was gone too. Turned into condos. Just a roving club night, kept somehow alive by the Gothic Faithful. But now, here it is again. In a new home, finally, back in Central Square in Cambridge. And so, inevitably, here I am too. And now I am that bold, fierce woman I so hoped I could be, on those dark-bright nights so long ago. Welcome back ManRay!
