2008 Context & Subtitling Help (Whore/Horror, Sarah Palin, Charlie Sheen?!)
The below video clip is from the EyeCon #2 convention in September 2008. Can anyone make heads or tails of this? I was living under a rock in 2008, or else maybe I'd get the references, but the only part of this I understand clearly is Jared's beloved whore/horror joke that he's used a few times.
There's often someone on Tumblr who can explain a reference that's going over my head, so I thought I'd try this one out on you all. Otherwise, this will just have to be one of those "Sorry, I have no clue!" bits that I can't explain.
Google searches have been of minimal help. I did learn there was an adult film parody released in November 2008 called "Who's Nailin' Paylin?" involving a Sarah Palin look-alike. It was released over a month after this convention, and it does look like the public was aware of it by the time of this convention. It seems like a stretch, but I guess it could be relevant? I've watched a lot of bizarre things for this project to better understand the context of things mentioned in the convention videos, but I would just like to state for the record that this will not be one of them. Reading the wiki entry was bad enough. 😂
I also know that the real Sarah Palin was running for Vice President in 2008 and the election was coming up soon in November.
And Charlie Sheen is a well-known American actor who I knew nothing about. It appears from my Google searches that he is/was known for having substance abuse problems. When I Googled the word "whore" in association with him, I learned that he had allegedly called his ex a whore (among saying other even more hateful things) in a text message a few months before the convention. I didn't see a lot of buzz about that in my search results, but maybe it was more widely talked about at the time? Today, it mostly gets drowned out by search results showing stuff he said in 2010 and later. As for horror, it doesn't look like he was in many (any?) real horror movies, but he apparently reported one he watched to the FBI in the 1990's because he thought somebody was really killed while filming it.
And I now know a whole bunch of things that I never really wanted to know, and I can only imagine what someone would think if they saw my recent Google search history. 🤣
