Every other month @samcrowrugs will be interviewing a new fiber artist whose work is either innovating or honoring this ancient tradition in the 21st century.⠀ ⠀ For our second installment of Contemporary @ Heirloom, Sam interviewed textile artist Jessica Vitucci (@jessrosemma). Much of her recent work focuses on hand embroidered portraits of women. Jessica likes to showcase the back of her embroideries just as much as the front allowing the viewer to see their construction and materiality. ⠀ ⠀ "I let the materials guide me. I love to work with what I have. This is also why I hoard miscellaneous materials. It is not so often that I go out in search of something that is needed for a piece I am working on. We would like to introduce our new project Contemporary @ Heirloom. Every other month @samcrowrugs will be interviewing a new artist whose work is either innovating or honoring this ancient tradition in the 21st century. Their work will also be featured both in shop and on our site.⠀ ⠀ We are ecstatic to have @andrew.boos kick us off. Andrew weaves distinctive kilims often using naturally hand-dyed wool on looms of his own construction.⠀ ⠀ “I still dye in a more painterly way. Throw a little more of this or that in the pot as I start to see the color develop. I’ve ruined some yarn before by being too impulsive with the additives but I’ve also discovered some new hues. "Black Cloud" by Amanda McCavour
Dark Matter features the work of Amanda McCavour and Terry M. Boyd, both of whom expressively use fiber to express emotion and push the boundaries of contemporary fiber art. This exhibition explores the more solemn and introverted emotional states, revealing and reveling in a darker side of our everyday consciousness. McCavour constructs Black Cloud out of various papers and yarns, creating a dark yet elegant form. The Cloud fills the room, so viewers will be able to interact with the artwork on an intimate level, peeking through it, looking up into it and walking around it.
Paired with McCavour’s Black Cloud is Terry M. Boyd’s aggressive and expressive embroidery. Boyd’s 2-dimensional hand sewn pieces are predominantly mono-chromatic works that explore memory and provoke thoughts of vast spaces and abstract landscapes.
