FP partner @krisrac is giving a lecture at Oxford, England today! #kristenracaniello #pilgrimage #flask ・・・ Been prepping all week for my lecture “Pilgrimage & Recall: the shrine as sensory catharsis, the flask as memory trigger” at Oxford (also trying to ignore that Dump 💩🚼 followed me to the UK 😑)!! Pictured here is 1.) one of the @metmuseum Menas flasks, a ceramic container made around 610CE and 2.) my version of a pilgrim flask, made with some borrowed clay in Slovakia and tied with my shoestring. I wanted a tool to better understand the relationship between these flasks, the body and the senses, so I traveled through Europe with it on my chest 🛫⛰🏺 ... Pilgrimage is a time based media; it creates a desire in practitioners to document and reinvigorate emotions and sensations experienced on the pilgrimage route. Sensory stimuli are memory triggers in the afterlife of medieval pilgrimage; souvenirs and eulogia acted as retroactive sensory stimulants, forming a complex, interlinked system of visual, tactile, and olfactory triggers that may have produced involuntary memory recall in the user post-pilgrimage. Memory is deeply connected to the human sense of smell. The olfactory bulb directly links to the amygdala and hippocampus; areas of the brain associated with emotion and memory. Visual, auditory, and tactile information do not pass through these brain regions. Thus olfaction, more than any other sense, is the superior trigger of emotions and memories.
