Because Gotham is located in New Jersey, and in Jersey, you aren't allowed to pump your own gas, and this is a source of comedy for like three people including me.

Bruce: Obviously he tops the list. He doesn't just know how to pump his own gas, he has a strategy for that shit. He memorized the steps at age 12 and has been living off of those steps ever since. Like everything else in his life, he's a little neurotic about it.

Babs: At age 15, Commissioner Gordon drove Babs across the river to Metropolis and taught her how to pump gas and then they made the drive together every single time after until she had a license and could do so on her own. She lords this efficiency over everybody else.

Tim: Kid embezzled a Batmobile. He knows how to pump his own gas. It DID take him a second to realize that was something he had to do himself, but he'd long figured it out by the time he legally owned a license with his own name and even his own face on it.

Jason: Dude does a lot of motorcycle roadtripping, he knows how to pump gas. Talia did have to teach him though, because the Batmobile doesn't exactly stop at gas stations and Jason never got around to doing driver's ed before he exploded

Dick: Dick only ranks this low because he learned to pump gas at a normal time through normal means and did not have to go through trials or tribulations to do so. And by that, I mean the Teen Titans made fun of him when they started working out of San Fransisco and he didn't know he had to put gas in his civilian bike himself. And then he figured it out.

Steph: Okay hear me out. Steph has her driver's license only because it's a convenient form of legit ID. She can drive the Batmobile with the best of them. She has rarely if ever had to pump her own gas. Girl doesn't drive unless it's the Batmobile and she isn't leaving Gotham unless its on a mission, in which case what is she doing at a regular gas station? She does not know how to pump her own gas with confidence but after poking around enough she'd figure it out

Cass: Cass has never had to pump her own gas in her life, and depending on where we are in her canon she cannot read the labels or instructions telling her what to do. There are no pictograms on the gas pump. It takes her watching three people pump gas to determine the correct buttons to hit in the correct order and what to do with the nozzle.

And honestly, I think this would be FASCINATING to explore in a character study sort of way. Obviously there’s a ton to point at about Dipper being trans because of his deep insecurities about masculinity and his perceived failure to meet societal standards of manliness. but something never discussed is outside perceptions of him as well! Other people don’t think Dipper is masculine! Stan and Mabel give him SHIT for it constantly in early episodes!

But then on the other hand, again if we were working under the headcanon that he’s trans in the show, you can see that at no point are they actually like. Actually dismissive of his gender. Which is WILD. Like. Yes, this is Dipper, who goes by that name (which we accept and use without hesitation) because he doesn’t like his birth name. Never once does anyone slip on this to the point where we never learn his birth name in-show (I think we get “Mason” in journal 3?). He’s a guy and we absolutely accept and endorse the fact that he’s male, it’s not his gender identity or the transgender part of his gender identity that we have issues with. It’s masculinity itself.
