Abandoned in Downtown Ripley Ohio by durand clark
Via Flickr:
A city block of emptiness on one of the main streets in the heart of Appalachia. Tough times after the loss of shoe factories, tobacco farms and warehouses. Seems that the Brown County shoppers go to Mt Orab, Ohio and Maysville, Kentucky. The village had a 2020 population of 1591 but little new in the way of industry or tourism. The Ohio River Valley is a tough place when it comes to change. Over the years this complex housed a fraternal order, a funeral home with caskets on display and a furniture store.

Taken on a snowy day along Wooster Pike (US-50) near the intersection with Walton Creek Road in the Plainville suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio. Wooster Pike is a very busy 4 lane highway. As you can see, it sits at the bottom of a high hill. The creek runs behind it, across the road where it flows into the Little Miami River which runs through the old Ohio River flood plain a few miles N of the current location of the Ohio. Seems like I remember this place all the way back to the 1940s. I used to pass it on a regular basis and thought it might be torn down since I took this shot on 12/22/2010. There has been a lot of building in the immediate area. I looked it up on Google maps and found it was still there in 2025 - their most recent post. The building was essentially unchanged. The 7 digit phone # is now completely gone as is the sign on the door. I'm not sure what all went on in the building, but for a very long time, they sold hub caps which I guess were found along roads.
