CW/TW: pet whump, BbU/WRU, dubcon, conditioned responses, sickness and death mentions.
âBeing a Domestic isnât a âpre-existing conditionââ, Carlisle says, after ending the call with the insurance representative. âDammit.â
He slumps down into a comfortable chair, closing his eyes. At least his parents had pet insurance for the household. It just didnât go far enough. It would not cover what his sick people need now.
It would cover quick and merciful euthanasia.
He understands, now, why the faces in the household changed so often. Easier to just burn through lives and replace them.
He doesnât want to do that. He wants to save them. If he can.
Someone brushes the back of his hand, before putting a hot cup in it. He smells the fresh coffee, and opens his eyes so he can guide it to his mouth and inhale a mouthful.
DiamantĂŠ smiles at him, and kneels gracefully at his feet. Blond haired, blue eyed DiamantĂŠ. Beautiful even in severely cut mourning black. His parentsâ Romantic.
âYouâre tense,â he says, almost purrs. âLet me make you feel better.â
He nearly chokes on his coffee when Dia undoes his pants and takes his cock into his mouth. Christ, it feels good for a minute. Then he recoils, this is his parentsâ Romantic, this is wrong on so many levels.
âDia, no. Stop.â
The Romantic draws back. âAm I doing something wrong? I can do better, I promise, yo-Master.â
Carlisle takes a moment to put his cock away. âYouâre perfect, Dia. But I donât want that from you. I will never want that from you. You donât need to do that for me.â
Tears fill up the crystal blue eyes, spilling artfully down sculpted cheekbones. Pain just cracks the pure tenor voice. âYou donât want me? Then youâre going to return me for-for refurbishment?â
âNo, no. Youâre staying here. Iâm trying not to break up the household, Dia, and that includes you. Just-not as my lover, my Romantic.â
He watches DiamantĂŠ work through this. The Romantic has lasted several years, heâs not stupid. This is just a new idea to process.
âThen-what do I do?â
Carlisle sips at the coffee, feeling it revive him, taking the edge off his nerves. âWhat do you want to do, Dia?â
âI want whatever my owner wants.â
âAs your owner, I want you to have your own wants and desires outside of mine.â Itâs a good counter to the conditioned response, he hopes. âIs there something youâve always wanted to do?â
âCan I-could I learn to read?â
âYes. Iâll ask Ellis to help you.â
âAnd may I massage your shoulders? Master, I need to touch someone. Itâs been days.â
âAll right.â
Itâs a good first step, he thinks. For both of them.

TW: Cleithrophobia (fear of being trapped), conditioned responses
"Whumpee, why don't you go change and we can go to dinner? Hmm?" Caretaker have Whumpee an encouraging smile.
"Y... yes, Master." Whumpee have a quick bow and ducked out of the room.
Caretaker's smile dissapeared as Whumpee left the room. "I wish you wouldn't call me that..."
Whumpee slipped out of their shirt and pulled on a white tee, buttoning an overshirt on top. They went to take off their belt, but it was stuck. Whumpee took a shaky breath and tried again. Still stuck.
Caretaker heard a whimper from Whumpeeâs room. Were they hurt? Caretaker went to investigate.
"Whumpee??"
Whumpee was sitting on the floor, hyperventilating and crying as they struggled with their belt. They flinched as Caretaker sat next to them and pulled them closer. They pushed back, trying to get away. Caretaker caught their hands.
"Pleaseâ" Whumpee gasped, still struggling. "Pleaseâ want it off!"
"Hey, hey, calm down. I'll get it off you, okay?"
Reluctantly, Whumpee stopped trying to get away. Caretaker had the belt undone in a moment.
Whumpee quickly pulled it off, slowly starting to calm down. They relaxed as Caretaker pulled them close again.
"There we go... you're alright. Can you tell me what happened? What made you panic like that?" Caretaker brushed their fingers through Whumpeeâs hairâ that always seemed to calm them.
"Stâstuck... I was s-stuck... Scared... D-don't like it..." Whumpee subconsciously leaned into Caretakerâs touch.
"No..." Caretakerâs voice was gentleâ so gentle. "No, you did nothing wrong. Please don't call me that..."
Whumpee looked up at Caretaker, who was crying. "Not... not master..? Your tears..." Whumpee brushed a thumb across Caretakerâs cheek. "I u-upset you..?" But Caretaker didn't sound upset.
"No... I'm not upset..." Caretaker sniffled. "Just... Please call me Caretakerâ like you used to."
"C... Caretaker..?"
"Yes! Yesâ please. Don't call me master anymore."
"Okay..." Whumpee brushed a strand of hair or of Caretaker's face. "Why are you sad..? D-did I..?"
"No, Loveâ it's not your fault..." Caretaker pointlessly dried their tearsâ more flooded their eyes in a moment. "I just miss the way things used to be."
"A-are we going to dinner..?" Whumpee wasn't hungry, but they didn't know how to stop Caretaker's crying.
"Ah... no... no, I'll cook something here. I don't think you're ready to go out. I just wanted things to be normal..." Caretaker stood, letting Whumpee go. "I'll start it now."
"Waitâ" Whumpee grabbed Caretaker's sleeve as they turned to go, then immediately pulled back, shocked at their audacity.
"What is it?" Caretaker didn't seem angry.
"C-can... will you h-help me unbutton my shirt..?"
Ink mars the paper in a scattering of dots and minuscule streaks where the pen taps out an agitated rhythm. The dim circle of lamplight subtly yellowing the pages of a notebook lying open on Ianâs desk. His elbow rests atop it, partially obscuring the untidy breakdown of a budget three times rewritten.
Itâs too thin, even with his own contribution bolstering it, and not for the first time does he suspect Olivia of withholding funds meant for the rescues. If he could see for himself the bank statements and not the cash she presses into his hands each monthâŚ
A patch of floor squeaks its protest as wandering feet tread the hall, and with no other rooms on the west side of the second floor the sound is a herald of an interruption. Itâll be the third that night. Ian sighs as he drops his head into the support of his hand, eyes flicking to the morose glow of the digital clock. 1:13am. Proper sleep always evades him on the nights he spends at the safehouse.
The lower hinge of the study door gives a plaintive creak under the tentative touch that swings it inward. The noise spikes his ireânothing in this house is capable of being used in silence. But he forces his expression smooth and his back straight as he turns eyes on the rescue who pokes his head into the room.
A little of the frustration melts from him as he looks over August. The easy one. The pretty one. With short waves of auburn hair and eyes the color of polished emeralds.
âYes?â
âIan?â August eases a step inside, shoulders tense and hands twisting in that habitual way of his that betrays fraying nerves. âC-can I⌠I canât sleep, can I sit with you?â
Ian dips his gaze to the pen in his hand as the request sets to fluttering something eager beneath his breastbone. He runs his thumb over the ballpoint, and watches the ink that marks his skin to give himself a thing to look at that isn't the allure of the rescue. Averting his eyes does nothing to diminish the temptation that comes alive in him when the rescues - particularly this rescue - come to him, with their hearts in their eyes and begging for praise.
In his peripheral, August takes a tentative step. âSir?â
Ian tries to stifle the gratification that rushes through him each time a rescue projects that title onto him. In the beginning he dissuaded it, now though- âYeah. Yeah, you can.â The words taste of impropriety. But there August stands unmoored, with unfilled hours between them and the dawn that will bring the safehouse out of slumber. If nothing else Ian can play the anchor⌠and garner his own pleasure from its role.
Tossing the pen atop the notebook he rises, the muscles along his spine aching their displeasure after too long spent in the chair. With a hand he beckons August to him, and the rescue steps into his arms like a moth to the flame. Smaller body tucking neatly against his and shivering beneath the soft touch of fingers that Ian trails down his back.
When the tips of them come up against Augustâs waistband he hesitates to retrace the path theyâve taken. Lingering there in a conflict of morals that kicks up the pace of his heart. That washes through him a warm wave that carries away the traces of his tiredness. All at once heâs wide awake and hyper aware of their proximity. He considers withdrawing. The thought is fleeting.
âWere you dreaming again?â Ian pitches his voice low, sweeping a hand between Augustâs shoulder blades to try to soothe the tension there.
âYes.â August curls a hand to clutch at Ianâs shirt. âI was-â A hitch of breath cuts him off as Ian slides under fabric. Fingers questing over a hip and tracing contours shaped just for them.
August stiffens in his embrace and Ian touches lips to his hair, thumb rubbing circles over a soft spot on his upper pelvis. A whine, beautiful and small, slips from August as instinctively he tips his head up to brush his face against Ianâs neck. The contact births a burst of tingles that swoop and sail through Ianâs abdomen, and itâs all he can do to keep from pressing himself more suggestively to the rescue. If this is wrong, then why does it have to feel so right?
âWhat were you dreaming?â Itâs more husky than he means it to be, and August loops arms around his waist in response. Does what Ian is reluctant to and presses their bodies flush together.
âI was dreaming of you,â August says, and itâs a lie. A string of empty words meant to play for his appeasement. A conditioned response that Ian recognizes but does not wholly dislike.
âWas I good to you in it?â He whispers it to try and temper the desire so plain in his voice.
âYouâre always good to me, Sir.â
Again, that pleasure, the one that comes with these broken people so desperately searching for authority in a world now alien to them. And Ian can give them that much, canât he? Can soothe their worries with murmured words of want, of praise, can help them find their footing by keeping them in his grip.
August shifts, and later Ian will tell himself it was belatedly that he recognized the reasoning. But in the moment he knows immediately that August is going to kiss him, and he does nothing to stymie the warm press of lips to his.

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3
There was a room put aside as a bedroom for him and Zach paced the floor of it until he knew the layout well enough that he could do it with his eyes closed. Not that he wouldâhe might as well save that for if, or when, he was left blindfolded and had to fend for himself without his senses.
It was nothing special. It should have been a small office, but it now contained a bed, a set of shelves, one upright chair, and thick paper over the window in the door to give him privacy. Privacy from people he remembered with crystal clarity but who felt like strangers to him now.
Archer less so, but the others were like dream-blurry visions, waving mirages looking at him with hope like he was someone they used to know. He was almost relieved to see a handful of unfamiliar faces amongst the old, new hires who wouldnât know him as he wouldnât know them, and others like Tom who he knew less well and might keep out of his way, and Sasha who seemed to be avoiding him and wasnât that a surprise she was, she was supposed to be--
He cut off the thought with the texture of the paint on the wall, running his fingers over the uneven cover of grey-ish mauve. His booted feet shuffled over the carpet tiles again and he noticed, not for the first time, that it was scratchy, and he knew it would itch and rub cruelly on his knees if he had to kneel on it.
He also knew no-one here was likely to make him kneel, or blindfold him again, and that the privacy they offered was for his own good and not so that bad things could happen in the dark. He knew all of that, logically. He knew it, but it was alien to think that way. There were two conflicting trains of thought in his head; the things he knew about normal life, about the members of his old team, about how people were treated when they werenât being held hostage; and the things ingrained in him from years of torment and abuse.
He wasnât sure how to navigate any of it. The thoughts and habits of being a free person had been a part of his life so much longer than his captive mindset it should have been like slipping back into a second skin. Only it was a glove that didnât fit right anymore. He knew how to wear it, he knew its purpose, he knew the rules and expectations. He just couldnât quite make it work, or make it natural.
Theyâd shown him the kitchen and the bathroom, and he knew he didnât have to be told to go use them. In fact if he asked for permission he knew it would draw strange looks and scrutiny he didnât want. His throat was parched and his mouth painfully dry, a headache building behind his eyes in a dull roar. But he couldnât make himself open the door and walk down the corridor and get a drink. He knew he should, he knew how. Why couldnât he do it?
It made him irrationally angry, like he was somehow being hard done to. That he was being tested and didnât know how to pass the test. It was the same sort of feelings heâd had to hide in front of his captors, rage and irritation, fury and fear at getting it wrong. He wished for the surety of voices whispering in his ear and clear instructions, or pain to guide his way, but there was nothing. Nothing but thirst, and maybe that was punishment enough. A constant reminder that he had to be better at this, he didnât have room to fail. No matter which side of the coin his flip landed on, no matter which side he placed his bets, he had to be strong enough to make his own way.
He wasnât strong anymore though, and every hour away from the man heâd knelt at the feet at for all these last months made him less and less sure that he was doing the right thing. If he could just talk to someone, if he could just⌠know. If he could just not be alone.
But he was alone. So he paced, and waited, and eventually when no-one came to retrieve him he pulled the blanket off the bed and curled up in the corner and, finally, sleep overtook him.
* * *
He awoke with a start at the opening of the door, and then froze as Archer stepped into the room. The blanket was up to his chin and he let go, let it pool in his lap and opened his mouth to speak, only no sound came out.
Archer looked over him, looked at the bed, and then shook his head like he was dispelling some kind of thought. Zach couldnât guess what impression he was making, or what kind of result it would end with. If they thought him incapable would they just send him back to some kind of recovery centre? Or toss him out on the street? Did he have a home anymore or had everything been sold off after his supposed demise?
Archer cleared his throat and pushed the door closed behind him. His face was drawn, tired, and Zach felt bad for being the cause of it. He wanted to offer some way to soothe Archer, to make up for all of it, but there was nothing he could offer that Archer would wantâand nothing that, deep down, Zach wanted to give. Not to Archer, not like that.
âYou know we hauled a bed up here for a reason,â Archer said, nose wrinkling in the strange half-smile he did when he was trying not to laugh at his own joke.
Zach snapped his mouth closed and pushed down his initial response which was to crawl up onto the mattress as though what Archer said was a lewd suggestion. He tried to be flippant, unsure if it would land. âI didnât want to mess it up, I havenât showered. I didnât mean to fall asleep.â
âWe thought you could use some rest, youâre still healing. Itâs been a few hours, we all thought youâd have taken a nap.â
So that, at least, he had done half right. âDid you⌠want me for something?â
âIf youâre feeling up to it Bryson thought we could start the initial debriefing. Find out all the wheres and whens, ask you how all this happened.â
Suddenly the insignificance of his previous trials was plain to see. This would be the real test. His dry mouth felt even more parched.
âZach?â Archer was on his feet, crouching nearby and Zach wondered how he missed that.
âFine. Iâm fine. I think⌠I need, I wonât be good without, I can do it but I just. Fuck.â He scrubbed his hand down his face, the first movement heâd allowed himself since Archer entered the room. âDying of thirst over here,â his voice croaked at the last word, illustrating his point.
âThatâs an easy fix, come on.â
Archer extended his hand and Zach took it, let himself be pulled to his feet and blinked away the spots in front of his eyes as his body adjusted to the change in posture. Touching Archer didnât make his skin crawl and that felt like a small victory. He tucked it away in his heart, pretending he could save up enough good moments to see him through.
Once in the kitchen Archer filled a tall glass with water and held it out. Zach hesitated, his conditioned response warring with what he knew was social etiquette. He leaned forward to take the glass between his lips, waiting for Archer to tip the water into his mouth and closed his eyes as shame washed over him. Archer made some sort of noise and grabbed Zachâs hand, guided it up to the glass and curled his fingers around it.
It was another faux pas, another stain against his perfect reputation in their minds. In the same way heâd fucked up when Bryson, a man he respected more than almost any other, had appeared in his hospital room. Instead of taking the offered hand and shaking it, heâd pressed it to his trembling forehead in a semblance of a bow. It was all wrong. It showed his weakness, his embarrassment, his crushed spirit. It covered their faces with pitying looks and he knew he deserved pity and to be looked down on, but he didnât want it.
âTake it,â Archer said, and Zach didnât miss the wobble in his voice.
He gripped the glass, and nodded, and gulped a mouthful, then another. The glass shook in his hand and he steadied it with his other as he straightened. âSorry. Um. Sorry? I wasnât allowed anything thatââ
âYou donât have to explain!â Archer interrupted.
ââcould be broken or used as a weapon,â he finished lamely. Archer stared at him and Zach couldnât meet his gaze. He took several smaller sips, wetting his mouth, waiting for the headache to ease and hoping his stomach didnât protest.
âI guess⌠youâre not used to asking for things either?â Archer replied.
Zach shook his head.
âOkay well, the Doc said simple food for a few days. Iâll grab you something before we head to the debrief. You, look, you have a seat, and Iâll rustle up something and weâll eat together. Okay?â
There was no protest Zach could, or wanted, to make to that. He sank into the offered chair and sat tentatively on the edge of it. Hot tears burned the backs of his eyes, threatened to spill, and he swallowed more water to try and stem the tide. He had Archer on side, Archer cared. He hoped fiercely that nothing he said or did would change that, it was the first real hope heâd had in a long time and it felt flimsy and liable to break under the strain of his wishing for it. It felt fragile, it felt like a candle flickering, just waiting for the wind to put it out.

Donât get me wrong, I like whiskey and craft beer as much as the next girl who ruined her life with tequila too many times to even smell it comfortably- but the realization that after having a rough day, my first response isnât âhow do I soothe myself, how do I make myself feel better, what would bring me a little bit of joy and make everything else stop feeling so terribleâ but âLetâs impair myself, maybe donât remember it, take something in that I know is a depressant and will keep me from thinking clearlyâ is a really, really jarring one.

Very fleeting and vague mention of @ashintheairlikesnowâs gross politician Oliver Branch. Right there, at the top, thatâs it. Sorry for the tag, Ash.
-
A news show spools out across the flatscreen. A background murmur of voices discussing the circumstances of some politician found drowned in a river states away. It stands as the sole source of light, and with each shift of perspective the shadows crowding the living room jump and dance.
The Stray follows them with his eyes, tries to trace their dark contours before they leap into a new position. But the pressure of a palm skating up his bare thigh recaptures his attention, and he blinks at the unpleasant reality of his situation. The hand stops just short of his boxers and gives a squeeze, and sitting across from him his host chuckles.
âDonât look so unhappy.â Jeremy leans in, presses a kiss to Strayâs neck that has him tipping his head away on instinct. On a command gone unspoken. âYou said you wanted to.â Another kiss. âI think you missed me.â
âI missed your couch.â Arousal robs Strayâs voice of the disinterest he aims for, turns it low, husky. Betraying the way his body craves the touch of flesh to his while his soul screams for distance. âAnd I never said I wanted to, I just said Iâd do it.â
Jeremy laughs. âMy couch canât pleasure you like I can.â With a splayed hand he pushes Stray back against the armrest, and holds him there as he drops his eyes. With a smirk they flick back up. âIt looks to me like you want it.â
Fingers glide over his waistband and Stray looks to the side. Stares at the clothes scattered across the floor as lips brush his ear, and he wonders why he ever agreed to take his off. A park bench would have suited him just fine, and he wouldnât have had to fuck for it.
But he knows why.
A fresh heat flushes through him as the boxers are slid from his hips. An abhorrent wildfire that burns down his reservations and stokes him to an unwilling readiness.
When Jeremy whispers, make some noise for me baby, Stray does. Gives him whimpers and whines in all the right places as hands and lips roam his skin. A flawless moan pulls from him as something else pushes in, filling his body with a pleasure that poisons his heart.
When they finish theyâre sweat slick and panting. Jeremy withdraws, crawling off to sit opposite him with a lazy smile just shy of patronizing. Stray doesnât return it. Half expecting a protest he stands, but all that pursues him is a sense of self-loathing as he makes for the bathroom.
Closing the door, he leans against it. Shutting himself in to be alone with that familiar sting, the one that comes in the aftermath of having wrecked himself for someone else.
The park was an option, but he belongs here. On a bed, a couch, a floor, with the weight of a man buried in him to give him a purpose. Itâs what he was trained for. What he signed up for.
A prickle starts behind his eyes, and he presses fingers to them to stop it from turning to something else. A fist squeezes his chest, and he measures his breath to keep it from hitching.
From the other room his name is called. And when Stray feels composed he follows it back to start again.
(Reminder, and for those who missed it, I changed Eliâs name to Zach from here on out and retroactively by editing the other pieces. Same character, same backstory, new name ^.^)

[Previous] [Other parts]Â [Backstory]
Zach was shattered. There were always more questions to answer and more they wanted to debrief him about and heâd also been assigned to have a session with a counsellor three mornings a week. It was hours at a time of dredging up just enough to let them know he was serious about his recovery, while keeping enough of his shame hidden where no-one would ever have to see it.
He spent every other moment that he wasnât being interrogated one way or another either hiding in the bedroom heâd been provided or sitting in the break room hoping to go unnoticed. More often than not if one of the team saw him they would ask if he wanted something to do. He nearly always said yes, wanting to be helpful and polite. They asked him to describe locations or remember the names of people or had him look through dossiers to see if anything dredged up memories of things that heâd overheard and could give them information on.
It didnât matter that he told them he wasnât allowed to be privy to anything important, or that he was always in some back room and often blindfoldedâthey wanted him to feel useful. He was good at being useful, just not in the way they remembered.
There were other jobs on the books that he wasnât part of and wasnât allowed to know anything about. People bustled back and forth, computer screens were on all the time, voices talked continuously in low undertones. The fridge in the break room hummed loudly and the water cooler bubbled annoyingly often and all of it was too much stimulation.
He found, one afternoon, that the interrogation room was blissfully quiet. With itâs dark grey soundproof walls and uncomfortable seating, it wasnât somewhere anyone else chose to spend time. It was a haven of quiet and he laid on the hard floor hoping that no-one would find him there.
He was wrong.
The door squeaked open and he froze before scrambling to his feet to see who it was and whether he was needed. It was Tom. Heâd been lower in the ranks when Zach left, and theyâd never had much of a rapport and no reason to be friends even then. Now there was a gulf between them that neither had tried to cross. Tom had barely stayed in the same room as Zach for more than a few minutes and wasnât privy to the debriefings like some of the others were. Zach hadnât sought him out and had barely said more than a word or two to him since he got back.
Now he twitched nervously as he waited for Tom to speak, his fingers tapping against his palm inside loosely curled fists.
âWhat are you doing in here?â Tom grunted, dropping a file of paperwork onto the desk. It landed with a soft thwack and Zach smothered a flinch.
âJust looking for somewhere quiet. You?â
âLooking for you, youâve been MIA for almost two hours. Theyâre checking storage cupboards and all sorts out there.â Tom scowled, and Zach thought it made his usually bored face look ugly, and mean spirited. It sent a shiver of unwanted anticipation down his spine. âAnd here you are sitting around doing nothing, wasting everyoneâs time.â
Zach inhaled slowly to calm his pulse, or try to, and nodded. He and Tom always grated on each otherâs nerves, there was no telling why, but it seemed his time away hadnât made anything better. âIâll get out of your hair.â
Tom crossed his arms and leaned back against the door, blocking the exit and smirking. Cruel, maybe, or some kind of power play. âOh you will, will you? How generous.â
Zach gathered the tattered edges of his courage around himself like a cloak. Drawing it close and trying to draw himself up tall. âDo we have a problem?â
âI dunno, you just swan back in after so long being gone and expect everything to go back to the way it was? After everything you did?â
âWhat did I do?â Zach asked, curious now, at which thing in particular he was getting the blame for this time.
Tomâs face darkened, his eyes narrowed as he shifted his weight forward and pointed an accusing finger at Zach. âWe all had to move, all had to go into hiding at a moment's noticeâbecause of you.â
The sudden onset of anger was shocking, a bottled up rage that was opened and poured out in so few words. Zach nodded, once. A swift bob of the head as the rest of his body fell into absolute stillness. He knew how to avoid enraging someone further when they were angry with him. At least, he always hoped he did. âIâm sorry.â
âI donât fucking care if youâre sorry,â Tom said hissing, stalking closer. âI lost my fucking cat because of you, she was out the day I vacated and when it was safe to go back I couldnât find her. I couldnât visit my dying grandmother in case I was seen and it put my family in danger. You ratted us out and now you come back and expect to be treated like the golden boy all over again? I donât think so.â He punctuated his sentence by stabbing Zach in the chest with a finger, prodding and prodding again until Zach stepped backwards.
âI didnâtâI donât,â Zach had no defence, no come back. He had no way to make up for it. Heâd given in under torture and duress, yes, wouldnât anyone? Heâd given their locations under threat of other peopleâs deaths too, but of course Tom didnât know that and he was sure it wouldnât take the sting out of the betrayal anyway.
âThey might all fall at your feet and mop up your tears and coddle you, but why the fuck should I? Huh?â
Zach pressed his lips together, balled his hands into tight fists and tried to breathe evenly. He wasnât safe for any of them, he knew that, heâd tried to admit as much. He couldnât make this right and there was a strong chance he was going to make it worse, hurt everyone again. Unless...âDonât coddle me,â he said. âYou can⌠you can keep me in line.â
âWait what?â Tom stepped back, and Zach chanced a look up at his face and saw confusion, furrowed brows and thin lips.
âIâll do whatever you say, you can tell me how to be. Make sure I donât fuck up.â
Tom laughed, bitter, acidic, sharp as knives and Zach cringed. âMaybe I want to see you fuck up, ever thought of that? Maybe I want everyone else to see the weaselly weak little arsehole underneath the façade. Why would I help you?â
âTo keep them safe.â Always to keep them safe. Always to minimise the damage. He just wanted not to be hurt, or see others hurt, or to keep picking at the wounds that were burned into his own soul; he couldnât do it alone and yet he was completely isolated.
Tom marched forward and slapped him, Zach reeled but turned his face back and offered the other cheek. The second slap forced his head so far to the right that his neck twinged and the impact site felt immediately warm, humming with a sting that would surely redden the skin. Tom shoved him and Zach stumbled before he fell to his knees, lowered his head and raised his hands in submission. Heâd do it, heâd do anything, just please make it all stop.
He waited. And nothing came. No pain, no orders, Tom showed no intent that Zach could brace for. He thought about reaching forward for a zipper or a waist band, and wondered if that would help. He tried, moved forward blindly and his hands met fabric, his fingers fumbled for the opening until his hands were roughly pushed away.
âWhat the hell?â Tom said. Zach glanced up and saw disgust and cringed at the hatred in the eyes watching over him.
Humiliation washed over him, smothered all other thoughts as he stayed there on his knees, willing and open... and unwanted? He used to think heâd grow beyond humiliation to where nothing could touch him anymore but he was always wrong. It was a slumbering thing inside him that awoke over and over again at the slightest provocation. On the floor in the midst of his old teammates, waiting to be found pleasing, or outed as a traitor, the red burn of it was as fresh as ever.
Tom snorted in derision and Zach grit his teeth, hurting his jaw as he ground them down and clenched his eyes shut. Tomâs hand grabbed his jaw, rough and warm and gripped it tightly, his thumb pressed into the hinge and Zachâs chin sat on his palm. Zach swallowed as Tom turned his face one way then the other, before forcing his head back until his neck strained at the pressure.
âOpen your eyes.â
Zach obeyed immediately, hatred ran deep but it was always, now, turned inward. Tomâs cool, icy stare appraised him, flicking over his features and down his body; disinterested and judgemental. Zach was laid bare again. Always. Weighed and measured, found wanting.
âThey really did a number on you, didnât they?â
Tom shoved him, and he choked briefly as his throat took the pressure of Tomâs hand under his chin before he fell backward, unbalancing off his knees to land on his backside. He sat there, stunned.
âIâll keep this dirty little secret between us, and you... donât tell anyone I hit you,â Tom said.
âYes, all right,â Zach breathed out the words and lowered his eyes to the floor.
âI could use a stress relieverâŚâ Tom mused, and then he laughed. âYouâve got yourself a deal, you can be my punching bag or my errand boy, or my bitch. Whatever works.â
Zach winced at the words but said nothing as dread pooled in his stomach, a cold and uneasy feeling. There was relief too, but it was smaller, drowned out by the knowledge that pain was sure to follow. By the time he looked up, ready to reply, the door was already slamming closed, and Tom was gone.
