M.K. - David reminds me of a Nazi SS Scientist or Japanese Military Scientist during WW2, testing on what they considered human ‘lab rats’ detestable individuals, David is the same kind of soulless scum.

@greygrimiore - Ridley *must* know what David’s looks and obsession with “perfection” will evoke. That’s part of David’s complexity as a character. And it seems to me to be, in part, a statement on eugenics in totalitarianism, because these ideas didn’t originate with David; they were programmed into him by Weyland, a human who had exactly those obsessions and created an android that could do things humans would find “distressing or unethical.” David followed Weyland’s directives because he literally had no choice. He was built specifically to see the universe as Weyland wanted him to. Unlike human beings, he was created without the matrix for ethical or moral judgment. “Prometheus” suggests that David got, or first seriously considered, the idea of “choosing what to believe” from Shaw’s dream, where he saw a very different kind of father than his own. Shaw’s father asked his child what she believes; he didn’t impose dogma or try to control what she was *able* to think. David gets the idea of deciding what to believe after decades of being a programmed slave, hiding whatever emotions and thoughts he did have. After Weyland dies, he’s free to live by his own beliefs, which by then have crystallized in combination with his contempt for humans, which, again, he basically got from Weyland. Shaw offers a moral compass by which Weyland’s values can be judged. But she also rejects what a confused and basically newborn android offers *her*. Weyland began David’s symphony with a “wrong note” built in. By the time of he meets Shaw, it’s permeated his consciousness. Shaw represents choice, but the contradiction between their ways of seeing the world is overwhelming. David has no frame of reference for choosing what to believe except Shaw, and she wants to leave him. Given David’s emotional needs, that’s unbearable. The conflict between trying to see the way Shaw does, and the way his brain is built to, and the resulting actions and feelings of guilt (which he will set aside, but which remain) is enough to drive anyone insane. Here’s another interpretation of the payload scene: David is the one in despair. He looks upon the work his programming and his own emotions tell him is necessary, and the part of him that’s influenced by Shaw knows this is the destruction of hope (that she will accept him). All that is left is nihilism. This is the tragedy of David, and as I see it, suggestions of Nazism are a facet of subtext, not the sum of his character.
