Aline Kominsky-Crumb, an essential figure in the history of underground comix, who produced decades of art which helped to define the American independent comic scene, died today. Her work, which began in Trina Robbin’s Wimmen’s Comix (the first comix collection to feature an out lesbian) was known for its confessional, intensely autobiographical character. She was also known for her controversial association and work with underground comix artist Robert Crumb, her husband of 50 years.
