While me and Zeus were on our walk this morning we saw this deceased North American Racer (Coluber constrictor), it's likely the same one we saw the other week. 😔😟
It likely died from getting hit by a car 🙁

Coluber constrictor is a species of nonvenomous, colubrid snake, endemic to North America and Central America. Eleven subspecies, including the nominotypical subspecies, are recognized, which as a group are commonly referred to as the eastern racers. (Source: Wikipedia)
One le cranky but beautiful boi. We were showing a youth conservation group of high school kids what we do for snake research and I’m almost certain that all 15 loved it :)

I caught a black racer!
Coluber constrictor priapus
Although deceptively colored when young, the Southern Black Racer darkens to its characteristic color as it matures. Adults are black with a grey underbelly. Their common name is derived from their speed, which can be quite fast when threatened. In addition, they may also release a foul-smelling musk to avoid predation. This species is non-venomous, with most of their prey being lizards, insects, rodents, and occasionally small birds.
This particular racer was sunning itself on top of a Zamia integrifolia, also known as a Coontie. It is the only species of cycad (ancient seed plant) endemic to the United States, and is only found in Florida and southern Georgia.
