Happy World Porcupine Day!
World Porcupine Day is celebrated annually on July 2nd to raise awareness about these gentle, quilled herbivores. Although they have an intimidating coat of up to 30,000 quills, these unique rodents play a vital role in our ecosystems.
Porcupines are divided into two main families: Old World porcupines (Hystricidae) found in Africa, Europe, and Asia, and New World porcupines (Erethizontidae) found in the Americas. Both have quills, but they differ significantly in their traits and habitats:
β’New World Porcupines: These arboreal (tree-dwelling) rodents are smaller and feature long, prehensile tails that function like an extra hand to grip branches. They have barbed quills. Examples include the North American porcupine and the Brazilian porcupine.
β’Old World Porcupines: These are larger, strictly terrestrial (ground-dwelling) animals. They lack prehensile tails but have longer, detachable, and heavily banded quills. Examples include the African crested porcupine and the Cape porcupine.
Porcupines act as vital "ecosystem engineers" by promoting forest biodiversity, creating crucial wildlife habitats, and transporting essential nutrients from tree canopies to the forest floor. Though sometimes viewed as pests for stripping bark, their natural foraging and digging behaviors sustain a vast web of other plant and animal species.

Have a Great Day ππ
Me and Zeus saw these Beautiful Parrots π¦ while on our 2nd walk. I've seen them flying around our neighborhood for a while now, but this is the first time I've seen them hanging around in our cul-de-sac.
The top 2 candidates (according to iNaturalist) are:
β’Rosy-faced Lovebird (Agapornis roseicollis)
β’Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus)
Both are well known to be invasive species here in Florida. Which means you likely won't get in trouble if you go out bring one home with you, though I'd recommend doing a bit of research on that first.
Hope Y'all have a great morning π

Zeus Sleeping under the blanket with me this morning π π΄
Deep within the vast forests of eastern Asia, a strange herbivore can be spotted amongst the underbrush. It is best not to approach it, or it will use its most unique characteristic to this perceived attacker: chemical weaponry.
This is the Six-eyed Stinker (Sputtonasus sexophtalmus), a member of the Odorophtalmines, or "Stinkeyes", a group of small to medium sized, generally solitary trunked herbivores descendants of dik-diks that have evolved very specialised preorbital glands, able to not only secrete but spray its secretions forwards. This is often used to repel potential predators, as these secretions are often foul smelling, and predators are overwhelmed by these smells and driven away, allowing the animal to escape.
In the case of the stinkers like S. sexophtalmus however, their secretions not only contain this highly odorous compounds, but they can borrow compounds from the various poisonous plants they like to consume to create a particularly effective cocktail, with the secretion being a highly concentrated mix of these compounds, being able to cause severe skin burns and rashes, necrosis or even the death of the organism depending on the type of compound used and where it lands.
It is a very energetically expensive product however, so to avoid having to use it as frequently, this group of animals often have highly aposematic patterns, very different from other underbrush herbivores. In the case of S. sexophtalmus, it not only has a bold black and white patterning, but it can use skin muscles to reveal four patches of skin and bright yellow fur underneath that resemble eyes, giving it its name.
What does it take to make African mythology real? Everything we had. Over 70% of our Kickstarter Backers came from Tumblr. Thank you. Now it's yours.
ZAIROO is out now.

Saw this Gorgeous Ganoderma zonatum π while watering our plants this morning π
I wonder if it's edible π
Ganoderma zonatum is a plant pathogen that infects the palm species causing butt rot. It is a fungus that infects the bottom 4β5 feet (120β150Β cm) of the plant also rotting the roots. It has been known to be in both natural and planted environments and in the majority of cases only in palms. (Source: Wikipedia)

Me & Zeus saw this cool Hairy Hexagonia (Hexagonia hydnoides) π while on our walk earlier
I made sure Zeus didn't get near it because I didn't know if it was poisonous

RIP Enhydriodon ππ’
We committed another great sin ever since the tragic death of Harambe π§
Sometimes I like to walk over to my local Wild Fork just look around and observe all the cool meats they got π
After a bit of research, I've finally found a place in our area that sells Tortas π
It's called Delicias Chapinas Restaurant
From what I've seen so far, it's really reminding me of a few places we've been to back when we lived in Maryland ππ
Hope Y'all have a great day/night π
