Controlling the populations of invasive species can be a big problem-- fortunately the Lake Erie water snake is here to help! Although historically its diet consisted of native amphibians and fish, this species has switched to predating almost exclusively on invasive round gobies (Neogobius melanostomus)! Not only does this help keep the goby population in check, but the abundance of food has helped to bolster Lake Erie water snake populations, which were once endangered but have now reached sustainable levels. A conservation win all around!
