If perched on it’s preferred resting place, this mantid would be difficult to discern! Known by the common names of Grizzled Mantis and Florida Bark Mantis, this insect mimics lichen growing on tree bark. As the name suggests, it is endemic to the southeastern United States, being found mostly in Florida.

Coluber constrictor priapus
Although deceptively colored when young, the Southern Black Racer darkens to its characteristic color as it matures. Adults are black with a grey underbelly. Their common name is derived from their speed, which can be quite fast when threatened. In addition, they may also release a foul-smelling musk to avoid predation. This species is non-venomous, with most of their prey being lizards, insects, rodents, and occasionally small birds.
This particular racer was sunning itself on top of a Zamia integrifolia, also known as a Coontie. It is the only species of cycad (ancient seed plant) endemic to the United States, and is only found in Florida and southern Georgia.
Strobilanthes dyerianus
Known by the common name of Persian Shield, this broadleaf evergreen shrub is endemic to Myanmar (Southeast Asia). However, it has become an increasingly popular ornamental shrub in the U.S., sought after for its characteristically iridescent-purple lanceolate leaves, which can grow up to eight inches in length. This plant produces lobed, funnel-shaped, violet flowers that emerge in a cone-shaped inflorescence (flower cluster). Because of this, it is also known as the Bermuda Conehead.
