A coffee a day keeps the slugs away!
In the kitchen we always use the most of our produce; nothing goes to waste so it makes sense that it should be the same front of house. Coffee grounds are a good source of phosphorus, potassium, magnesium & copper. They release nitrogen into the soil as they degrade which makes them great to use in your flower beds, or as an addition to your compost pile. This is great for plants and flowers which like acid. Coffee grounds can be harmful to dogs so just be careful if you have pets. Sprinkling coffee grounds into your garden or flower beds also deters slugs & ants.
Coffee grounds act as an abrasive that cut through grease without damaging your dishes so are fantastic to use to clean residue off of your dishes & pans. Smelly fridge? Take a bowl and fill it with some coffee grounds and place that in the back of your fridge, (or anywhere else that’s smelly) to help eradicate bad odors.
If you have been gutting fish or working with garlic & onions. Grab a handful of coffee grounds and rub them in your hands to exfoliate and get rid of dead skin cell. Rinse your hands well afterwards. I like to add cold pressed coconut oil to my coffee grounds to make a lovely body exfoliater.
Here is a simple recipe for compost for your vegetable garden.
Use about 20kg of organic matter (e.g. vegetable peelings) and mix in 1 to 2 kg’s of the coffee grounds. Leave for about 3 weeks until broken down to form compost.
Coffee ground body scrub! Using a waste product for something new 😁 This kind of body experiment is what I do when I get home on a Friday night. I'm a very cool kid. I have many friends. #bodyexperiment #diy #diybodyscrub #bodyscrub #coffee #coffeegrounds #exfoliate #zerowastenz #zerowaste #health #skincare #experiment #friday #tgif #pamper #selflove #selfcare #invigorating (at Wellington, New Zealand)

Take a little bit of soil, water it, and pour white vinegar on it. If that fizzes, the soil is alkaline. In my case that didn’t happen. But if you do this and it does fizz, take old coffee grounds and put them in the soil where you want to make your garden. This will also help keep cats away from your plants!
Untapped resource: coffee grounds. Turning waste into a resource for natural dyeing. I'm thinking about the food waste in my local area in particular the university I tutor at and it's local coffee shops. Coffee ground waste is immense, we only have to think about how much coffee the population consumes and then imagine this on a global scale. The cafe upstairs from my workplace uses kilos and kilos of coffee each day. How can we divert this and use this resource? In one day we reclaimed a FIFTEEN litre bucket full of used grounds that would just go into landfill and won't be composted. Instead we are trying to divert a small amount of this waste in a local trial to see haw we can use it as a natural fabric dye. How could we upscale this on a larger scale? Utilise the dye qualities and then responsibly compost afterwards? #foodwaste #waronwaste #wasteasresource #coffee #coffeegrounds #naturaldye #tannin
