The nutritive value and the mycoflora of sundried cocoyam chips were investigated during six months storage. Seven fungi namely Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus glaucus, Absidia corymbifera, Mucor spp., Rhizopus spp., Candida spp were isolated during the study. The fungal count was found to increase as the storagetime increased. The result of the proximate analysis (in %) showed that crude protein increased from 9.32 in freshly prepared samples to 11.36 in sundried samples stored for twenty four weeks. Also, carbohydrate content increased from 68.32 in freshly prepared samples to 69.52 in stored samples. Ash content increased from 3.55 to 4.20. Fat content decreased from 1.76 to 1.40 and the moisture content also decreased from 14.07 to 12.47 within the six months of storage. The result of mineral analysis (in mg/100g) showed that magnesium increased from 13.86 to 19.43, sodium increased from 15.53 to 16.55 but calcium was decreased from 23.50 to 23.21, zinc from 0.73 to 0.68 and phosphorus from 38.55 to 33.85. Copper, manganese and lead were not detected. This study has revealed the increase in the nutritional value and proximate analysis of sun dried cocoyam chips.

SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF AVAILABLE FE ON LITHOSEQUENCE GROWN TO TARO IN SOUTHEASTERN NIGERIAN | Journal of Global Agriculture and Ecology
Fe is a critical micronutrient for taro (Colocasia esculenta (L) Schott), a key carbohydrate staple food in Nigeria and the tropical regions, to grow, yield, and quality. Using the kriging technique, the spatial distribution of Fe on a lithosequence from the late Tertiary era (> 5,000 years ago) in southern Nigeria, where taro is a prominent crop in the farming system, was estimated. Coastal plain sands, shale, and sandstone are the parent materials, with a total area of 4.28 million hectares (m ha). 69 soil samples from 0 to 30 cm depth were collected and tested at geo-referenced locations. Geostatistics was used to quantitatively determine the spatial distribution of accessible Fe using data from soil analyses. The findings revealed that roughly 1.90 million ha (44.4%) of sandstone is low in accessible Fe ( 20 mg/kg). However, accessible Fe levels are moderate in over half of the study region (53.5 percent, or 2.29 million hectares), which is dominated by coastal plain sands and shale. Increase the productivity and quality of cocoyam corms and cormels by using Fe micronutrient as a foliar treatment or adding it into NPK fertilisers, as well as using integrated (organo-mineral) plant nutrient management. CONTRIBUTION OF COCOYAM TO RURAL FARMERS INCOME GENERATION IN IHITTE UBOMA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF IMO STATE, NIGERIA | Journal of Global Agriculture and Ecology
This research focused on the socio-economic characteristics of cocoyam farmers, the various uses of cocoyam, the profit-generating ability of cocoyam for farmers, the contribution of cocoyam to farmers' income, the socio-economic determinants of cocoyam income generation, and the issues that rural farmers face in the production and sale of cocoyam in the study area. 120 respondents were chosen using multi-stage random sampling, and data was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. The data was analyzed using frequencies, means, percentages, net return analysis, and the multiple regression technique. According to the findings, 85.0 percent of farmers cultivated between 0.1 and 2.0 hectares of cocoyam, which was mostly consumed as boiled porridge. Cocoyam production was profitable, according to the net return analysis, with an average BCR ratio of 1.36 and profit of N 40919.3 per hectare (1 US Dollar = N 198). Cocoyam also contributed 12.7 percent of the farmers' total income, indicating that it was a significant source of income for them. Level of education, farming experience, land area cultivated, hired labor, quantity of cocoyam sett planted, age, and gender all had a significant impact on the amount of income generated from cocoyam production. Lack of investible funds (91.7%), poor storage facilities (90.0%), limited land (90.0%), lack of market information (86.7%), poor infrastructural facilities (85.0%), lack of extension contact (80.0%), and pest and disease attack were the main constraints for the majority of cocoyam farmers (70.0 percent ). It was suggested that policies be implemented to improve farmers' access to credit facilities. Farmers should form cooperative societies to increase their access to available credit.
