Rex’s shoulder guard has a weight to it that his other doesn’t. Echo knows that’s ridiculous - every piece of armor they have is weighted to match it’s likeness. Fives’ guard weighs the same as Echo’s which weighs the same as Rex’s.

And yet...

It’s Rex’s guard. Formerly Commander Cody’s guard, apparently.

The uj’ayl recipe is in Cody’s hand. Echo hadn’t known what his handwriting looked like before this.

Even if, in physical space, the guard weighs the same as his other, his brain is creating the extra weight of legacy in it.

It snaps smoothly into place across from the other. When Echo turns his head, he catches a whiff of ozone and cleaning agent - signs that while the rest of his shell is new, this piece has seen action.

He’s looked up to the Captain since their first meeting, and now... now he’s wearing a piece of his armor.

It’s an intimacy that he doesn’t quite know how to handle, sticking in his throat and weighing on that shoulder.

He’s shared armor before, with Fives (on purpose) and Cutup (on accident). Every growth cycle on Kamino had them taking on hand-me-down training armor.

This is different, though.

This is Rex.

Day 9: Hurt/Comfort

They didn’t specifically talk about it, but Comet was always aware when the anniversary rolled around. As the day drew closer, Wolffe, Sinker, and Boost would get quieter, more twitchy, and the shadows in their eyes deepened.

When he woke up on the morning of the anniversary of the day the entire 104th, save for Wolffe, Sinker, Boost, and the General, were wiped out by the Separatists, Comet went straight to the mess and picked up four boxes from Wipp.

“Their favorites. Just like you asked for,” the cook said quietly, handing over the boxes with a pained look.

Comet gave him a sad smile and headed back towards Wolffe’s quarters.

They didn’t always pile into Wolffe’s room - it was a tight squeeze for four grown men, even if they were pilots - but Sinker and Boost had a hard time bunking down elsewhere in the weeks around the anniversary.

Comet opened the door and slipped inside quietly. The other three were curled up together on the bed, awake but unmoving. He set the boxes of food down on a shelf and grabbed the extra blanket he had stashed in a drawer a week earlier.

“Shh,” Comet soothed as Boost made a questioning noise at the rustling of him shaking out the blanket. “It’s just me.”

He draped the blanket over the three survivors and settled onto the floor next to the bunk.

Wolffe’s hand snuck out from underneath to card through Comet’s hair, and he leaned into the soft touch.

Sinker spoke first. “Ni su'cuyi,” he breathed into the stillness of the room. “Gar kyr'adyc, ni partayli, gar darasuum.”

“Highball,” Boost began.

“Murk,” Wolffe rumbled.

“Patch,” Sinker said quietly.

“Lili.”

“Twick.”

“Jagged.”

Comet closed his eyes and listened silently as his lovers took turns listing off the original members of the 104th - all the brothers who had gone marching on together, leaving Wolffe, Sinker, and Boost behind to pick up the pieces of each other.

Day 5: 79's

Pairing: Fox/Echo/Fives

Fox didn’t usually spend much time in 79’s - it was hard to actually be off-duty when everyone kept looking at you to keep the peace.

This, though… this he would make an exception for.

Echo was practically in his lap, reaching over to steal Fives’ drink for ‘just a sip,’ while Fives tried to save his drink by also pressing against Fox, as though trying to hide between him and the back of the booth. Both of the ARCs were laughing, that easy and bubbling laughter that said they were pleasantly tipsy.

Fox was pretty sure he was tipsy, too, if only because he was laughing along with them.

They were safely ensconced in a back booth, and with the broad-shouldered ARCs to either side of him, Fox was as anonymous as he ever had been in 79’s - he wasn’t the Commander of the Coruscant Guard tonight. He was just another vod tucked away in a dark corner with a partner or two.

“Foooooox,” Echo whined as he fell most of the way into Fox’s lap, still trying to steal Fives’ drink. “Tell Fives to share!”

Fox snorted and patted Echo’s shoulder in a sympathetic manner. “No.”

Echo pouted up at him, doing a fairly good impression of a sad shiny. “But I’ll let him try my drink!”

“I don’t want to try your drink!” Fives declared.

“What’s wrong with my drink?” Echo demanded.

Fives and Echo began arguing across Fox, who leaned further back against the booth and laughed quietly at the two of them. Fives gestured broadly with his glass, almost sloshing the drink over himself, and Fox reached out and swiftly grabbed it, saving them from an unwelcome bath.

Neither Fives or Echo really seemed to notice. 

Fox sniffed at the glass, and found it didn’t smell completely disgusting. He took a sip.

Hm. Not bad.

He set the empty glass down on the table in front of them with a thunk.

Fives blinked at the glass, then turned to Fox. “Wait a tick - did you drink my drink?!”

“Yep.”

“Fox!”

Echo collapsed into helpless giggles, draped fully across Fox’s lap, as Fives gave him a wounded look.

Fox just grinned at him. “I’ll make it up to you later.”

Fives was still frowning, but not as deeply. Echo was grinning like the tooka that caught the porg.

Fox smirked as he ran a hand through Echo’s hair and reached out to reel Fives in for a kiss.

Pairing: Tup/Fives/Dogma

"Where's the fire?" Fives asked, mostly joking, as a shiny skidded around the corner and almost head-long into him and Echo.

The shiny froze for a moment before tearing off his helmet and pointing at Fives irritably. "You! This is all your fault!"

Fives felt his jaw drop on it's own accord as beside him, Echo doubled over laughing.

“Do you know how much time I spent practicing fire safety?” the vod hissed, eyes wild. The tattoo over his face was large and intricate and Fives was fascinated by how the ink shifted as the vod - his soulmate - snarled. “How many prevention and extinguishing methods I read up on? The amount of training sims I ran in the middle of the night?”

“No,” Fives squeaked. Echo absolutely wheezed beside him, which was not helpful.

“Too karking many!” the vod said, poking Fives’ chest with an authoritative finger. “And it’s just a joke?!”

“Dogma?” Another shiny appeared behind the first, this one at a more reasonable pace. “I heard yelling.”

Fives’ soulmate - Dogma, his name is Dogma. He likes it. - whirls around to scowl at this new vod. “You’ll never guess who I just found.”

The shiny took off his helmet, revealing that he also had a facial tattoo - a teardrop, below one eye. His hair was gathered back neatly, and looked very soft.

He gave Fives a considering look, before glancing at Echo, who was leaning against the wall for support as he giggled.

“What’s wrong with him?” 

Echo made a strangled noise and laughed even harder. Traitor.

Fives thwapped his shoulder with the back of his hand. “Don’t pay attention to him, he’s an idiot.”

The new vod blinked, looked to Dogma’s fuming face, and simply said “ah.”

He stepped up and held out his hand. “I’m Tup. This is Dogma.”

“Fives,” he said, shaking Tup’s hand. “The idiot is Echo.”

“Rude.” Echo wheezed.

Fives rolled his eyes, smiled at Tup when he noticed him - his other soulmate! - doing the same.

Across his ribs, he swore he could feel his two tattoos warm in the presence of his soulmates.

You! This is all your fault! on the left, and What’s wrong with him? on the right.

Fives slung his left arm over Dogma’s shoulders, and his right over Tup’s.

“Wherever you two are headed, I’m coming with you, and Echo is not.”

Tup giggled. It was a nice sound.

Pairing: Rex/Bacara

There are probably worse places to reunite, but not many. 

Rex doesn’t particularly care, though. The dirty booth in 79′s is the best place in the universe if it’s where he can hold on to Bacara.

“Don’t leave,” Rex grumbles as Bacara shifts slightly.

“Not going anywhere, tat’ka,” he murmurs, squeezing Rex closer for a heartbeat with the arm around Rex’s shoulders. “Just trying to get more comfortable.”

Rex huffs a little but doesn’t complain that the new position has Bacara’s cuisse digging into his hip, or point out that the plastoid seats at 79′s don’t get more comfortable because that’s not the point of them. 

Around them, the crowd is mostly 501st vode, but even from this protected position, Rex can tell exactly where the handful of other Novas are amongst the crowd. His troopers orbit them carefully, giving them breathing room without excluding them, letting the Marines set their own boundaries. 

They don’t know what the other side of the blockade is like, but they know the flinch of survival instincts working overtime all too well. 

So Rex and Bacara will hold each other in a booth in the back of 79′s, soaking in the presence of each other for as long as they are allowed, and the 501st will joke and touch and invite the Novas to play along until they don’t look quite so wrong-footed, and maybe, maybe, when Bacara takes his small group back to Mygeeto, they will go with stories of how, even though the Marines are cut off from the rest of their vode, they are still welcomed with open arms.

Bacara hides a smile against Rex’s scalp as he hears a soft laugh over the chatter of the bar and knows it was one of his Novas.
