Hi! I wear a *lot* of dresses and heels and I'm starting to worry about freezing in the Northampton winter... I'm investing in some fleece lined tights, but do you have any other advice on staying warm?
Hello! I’ve lived in Massachusetts my whole life so I definitely have a few tips for surviving the winters here. Fleece-lined tights are great, but sometimes the wind does go right through them so here’s a few other things you might want to consider:
Scarves! Anything to cover up your neck and face when you’re walking through the snow or wind to class is helpful both to keep you warm and to stop your skin from becoming chapped. And hats, of course, because you want to trap as much heat as possible.
A long winter coat. It’s sometimes nice to have a coat that goes a little longer than most jackets do, just so that the cold air doesn’t make its way under the coat. This is especially helpful on longer walks when your legs get cold quickly. Plus, because you said you like to wear dresses it could be nice to have the extra layer over them.
Snow boots. Last year we only had one snow day but there was a lot of snow on the ground for a while. It can be really dangerous to walk around in shoes that don’t have good traction (especially heels!) and snow boots can keep your feet much warmer, too. Lots of people have Bean Boots on campus, but they’re not for everyone so I’d suggest looking around for boots that fit your needs.
Gloves and socks. Like most of this list, it’s kind of a given that you’d want to wear gloves and socks when it’s cold out, but I really recommend investing in some thick wool socks that you can wear with your boots, especially on longer walks.
If you’re coming from a warmer climate and can’t find/ship some of this stuff, there are a bunch of stores around campus that have some warm clothes for the wintertime. Thanks for asking!
