ik clay is a very selfish man, but do you think he could actually fall IN love with Orel???
Hmm, this is an interesting question...
My interpretation is that Clay views Orel as an extension of himself - who he hates. I think, because of this, he's incapable of truly loving his son in any way, romantic or parental. I don't think it's a matter of selfishness exactly, but moreso that Orel is a representation of both his failures and ideals that intimidate him. Despite shipping them, I don't really think Clay has much attraction to Orel - Orel is just a device he can use and take frustration out on. It's mostly feuled by hatred.
Of course, there is a more pathetic side to Clay. He wants love, he wants adoration, and when he starts to lose his grip on Orel, he gets desperate and frazzled. He undoubtedly feels connected to Orel in a fucked up way, and I think it's possible that in some context he may begin trying to appease Orel in order to keep that connection. I could see him take a sharp turn from aggressive to groveling, under the right circumstances.
But ultimately, no, I don't think he could be in love with Orel. I think he has complicated feelings towards him, in that part of him wants to be a good father but doesn't know what a good father should be, and another part of him wants to be a God controlling him, and another can't look him in the eye out of disgust for everything Orel is. Any love within him is swallowed whole by these other feelings.
