Performing a crystallization-induced asymmetric transformatio (CIAT).
During the really special type of reaction an enantio and diastereoselective product is prepared using a partially reversible reaction in a highly concentrated reaction mixture. The gifs were recorded after the first small crystals started to separate from the reaction mixture.
During this reaction the equilibrium of the products is shifted to the better crystallizing product. Since in solution each component falls apart and recombines, always a constant concentration of both components are present, but since only one of these are crystalline, this “falls out” from the solution, yielding a highly valuable, pure product in the crystalline phase. And an easy workup is at the end, just filter if out, wash it and dry it.
