Routine chemical analyses involve determination of the mass percentages of C, H, N and S in a compound, and are often carried out using an automated elemental analyser such as the one shown in the schematic diagram in figure 3.8.

[39/100] 04/02/2021 ::: Omg, what a day. I had coffee yesterday, and while I did sleep quite alright, it wasn’t until 1:30 am. My alarm went off at 7:45, I snoozed and fell back asleep until shortly before 9. Went grocery shopping to make pizza for my bf’s bday today. [longer post ahead]
A colleague meanwhile sent me a voice message, informing me he’d found an error in my calculations for a paper we’re (he is) working on (it’s a project I worked on 4.5 years (!) ago).
Turns out I made one error in my data table (and also in my current table for the PhD samples) because I misunderstood one concept of how to quantify my results. He asked me to correct that (wasn’t a big deal really, only cast a bit of doubt). He also asked me to check the data again, enter filenames of where the datapoints come from (which I never did but noticed much later that is would have been useful) and integrate a few data points again.
I said, “Sure, give me a few hours, that can be arranged.”
Well, I worked on it for 4h, pretty much straight, only took two breaks to make tea. Eventually I ticked off one task and an other and finished most of it alright.
Around 4 pm, the bf and I went on a walk (photo is from a few days ago, when everything still looked nice and snowy) and had pizza.
I kept working on the data until 9 pm (now). My head is dizzy and I am annoyed by how stupid my workflow was 4 years ago (that’s how old the data is that we are working on) but it’s also satisfying to see that the master-table that I am building makes sense and the numbers check out nicely.
ON the good side: things worked out and make sense again.
On the down side: I wrote exactly 0 (in words: zero) words on my paper or dissertation, and I was so motivated to do that since yesterday gave me quite a boost.
Okay, that might have been my longest post here, so let’s end it here. I’m tired. Time for some yoga, tea, book and bed. good night xx

Sagar Nagar, Visakhapatnam, February 21, 2020. No matter how muddy brown the inshore water is, it still manages to fully whiten itself into liquid snow upon shattering impact, the fine brown suspended sandy sediments incapable of halting this dramatic and subitaneous chromatic alteration. This whitening phenomenon is not easy to explain, for catoptric sunlight reflection alone cannot explain it. It is routinely witnessed that sunlight reflection on seawater in the 17 degrees North Tropics turns it into silver, a silvery surface, NOT snow white, as witnessed here. Silver and White are - to state the seemingly obvious - NOT similar colors - a chromatic abyss separated White from Silver. One awaits the Optical Physicist who can cast light on this fantastic fulgurant phenomenon.
The remarkable four-color banding of the tropical inshore waters. First the water goes from deep blue to light muddy brown, before darkening once again to turquoise, which in turn gives way to a muddy brown again!! - a mystifying phenomenon better seen in the series of photos above this particular series.. I am not sure if I remember correctly, but I think these delicate delightful contrasts of colour are witnessed only in Winter and are absent in Summer, but this needs visual verification. See also the pertinent comments two series of photos below. Sagar Nagar, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, February 21, 2020.

Chromatography Chromatography is the process of using a filter paper or any other absorbent paper to separate pigments. A filter paper’s bottom part is marked with pencil where an ink is stained just enough to concentrate its color on to the paper. The solvent is poured in a petri dish. The solvent might be water but ethanol is preferred due to its high rate of solubility. The paper is than…
