We arrived into Mumbai's Dadar Central station late at night and immediately were set upon by swarms of hawkers offering us cheap hotel deals and taxi services. Fortunately we had booked a hotel 100m away and so quickly escaped the hoards. The following day we walked around the city - down to the India Gate (where the last of the British soldiers walked out from India as it gained independence). It was humid and somehow dusty everywhere - it clung to us and our clothes. The hustle and bustle of Mumbai was everything we expected and had prepared for - it was the chaos that you came to strangely loathe and love in equal measure. We had been almost crushed in the train journey down to the Gate as we piled into the second class carriage for the authentic experience. The lack of consideration of personal space (partly but not wholly out of necessity) was deeply uncomfortable but the genuine smiles we received from the locals as two 'goras' who were travelling with them as equals. Loathed and loved.... We walked to the Crawford Market - to people watch as vendors sold their goods to locals. The business model of having several almost identical stores next to each other was hard to fathom - Charlotte quickly told me to stop trying to make sense of it! We also walked down to the World Trade Centre and to the edge of the slum next to it. Home to thousands of people, its proximity next to the luxury building was hugely contrasting. The following day was our final day in India and we made the most of it - walking everywhere we could. We went down to the famous Chowpatty Beach and also to Gandhi's museum situated in a place he used to stay when in Mumbai. Highly recommended if you visit. Again we strictly refused to take taxis - opting for yet more cramped trains and walking over 20km. In the evening we took our only taxi, to the airport. Perhaps my haggling had angered the driver as his driving was pure lunacy. We hurtled towards standing traffic - accelerating at the view of brake lights - before somehow finding gaps that a second before didn't exist. Safe to say (and apologies for the language) I shat myself on several occasions during the 45 minute taxi. We had survived India and neither of us had been ill. On to China and country 8 of 11.
