Ingredient: Benzocaine, menthol, or phenol.

Dosage Form:

Lozenges*: 6 mg benzocaine and 10 mg menthol (wild cherry, honey lemon, sugar-free wild cherry).

Maximum Strength Lozenges (Max): 15 mg benzocaine and 10 mg menthol (wild berry flavor).

Throat Spray: 1.4% phenol (Cherry, menthol, honey lemon, citrus flavors).

Maximum Strength Spray: 1.5% phenol with 33% glycerin (wild berry flavor).

Children’s Chloraseptic Spray: 0.5% phenol (grape flavor).

(*Also available with a cough suppressant).

FDA Indication/Dosages:

For temporary relief of occasional minor mouth irritation and pain, sore mouth, and sore throat: Use as needed every two hours or as directed by a physician or dentist.

Pharmacology: Phenol has germicidal activity as well as anesthetic activity. Phenol is bactericidal above 1%. It is thought to exert its action through protein denaturation. Benzocaine is a local anesthetic structurally similar to procaine. It increases the threshold for electrical excitation in the nerve cell by decreasing the permeability of the cell membrane to sodium ions during polarization. Prolonged use will decrease effectiveness. Menthol is a counterirritant which has analgesic activity at concentrations under 1%.

Evaluation: A sore throat can be caused by bacterial or viral infection or by direct irritation such as dryness or cough. Sprays and lozenges are used to treat the symptoms and may mask the underlying cause. The patient should be advised to see a doctor promptly if the sore throat is accompanied by a fever, swelling, headache, nausea, or vomiting.

Contraindications/Precautions: The presence of a sore throat may be an indication of a more severe condition. If accompanied by or followed by a fever, difficulty in breathing, headache, nausea, or vomiting, stop use and consult a physician or dentist promptly. Do not use for more than 7 days unless directed to do so by a physician. Benzocaine may cause allergic reactions in sensitive patients. Do not use in children under the age of 2 years.

Adverse Effects: Rare beyond symptoms being treated.

Patient Consultation:

Ask the patient if they have a fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, or trouble breathing.

Do not use for more than 7 days or if condition worsens.

Allow lozenges to dissolve in mouth.
