“Well, she gets them for me, Dor,” you remind her with a chuckle, rolling your eyes as the sounds of the lunch room grow louder. “Though, she’d probably gladly pack extra just for you.”

Being friends with THE Doreen Green was perfectly fine. It was being friends with Squirrel Girl that was the interesting part. Doreen just hummed in acknowledgment as she munched on the nuts, her opened book bag shuffled slightly as a small squirrel peaked its nose out just a smidge.

Tippy Toe knew better than to be seen during the school day, though the talk of nuts stirred her from her hiding spot. She was nestled between a thick math book, a clean change of gym clothes, and the empty bag that had once contained trail mix. Her little pink nose twitched expectantly as Doreen slid over a single peanut discreetly. Although, a squirrel with a pink bow around her neck would be the least weird thing this school has seen…

Living in New York with the Avengers running amok made fire drills and earthquake practices seem like nothing. But “kid goes crazy and makes mutant robots to destroy the school and now for some reason, Iron Man is blasting down the door of your math class in the middle of a test (which you studied really really hard for) and telling you to leave” THAT was an exciting safety drill!

Anyways, the three of you sat in a comfortable silence for a while, you ate the sandwich your mom had lovingly packed, and Doreen shared the nuts with Tippy. You offered the squirrel one of the flavored nuts, but she was even more of a nut purest than Dor was!

“I have that stupid group project for english due- and obviously im doing all of the work for the slideshow-” you had been telling Doreen, mind swimming with assignments and quizzes that were upcoming.

“Doreen!” a voice called out, interrupting your ranting to your friend. The voice belonged to none other than Tomas Lara-Perez. Or, as you had recently learned, another mutant superhero who went by Chimpmunk Hunk. 

You teased him for the name relentlessly… and it was the only time ever Doreen didnt join you in teasing a friend. Her crush on the boy was painfully obvious.

Doreen had already perked up, probably knowing he was close by much sooner than you did. She turned to look at Tomas, her brows pulled into a look of confusion.

“...yes?” she slowly asked, both of you noting how out of breath and worried Tomas looked, “What’s wrong? What happened?”

Tomas sucked in a deep breath, “Some of the squirrels were sniffin’ out something sketchy,” he explaines in a hushed voice. It wasnt like anyone in the cafeteria would be listening to them, let alone care. In fact, being seen as the weird kids who thought they could talk to New York Squirrels was really not the worst title to own.

Tomas’ words caused Tippy-Toe to squeak out to Doreen, who looked even more concerned now. 

You just silently observed, not having any abilities yourself, you always just enjoyed watching from the sidelines. Helping out here and there if you could.

“Does New York need Squirrel Girl?” You jokingly ask, a smile pulling on your lips as you wipe your hands off. Your question was rhetorcal, obviously New York ALWAYS needed her, wether the city actually knew it or not.

Doreen shoots you an apologetic smile, muttering a remorseful apology as she stands up and gets her stuff in order. Tomas was already backing up and glancing to the doors out of the lunchroom. He also says something about being sorry he had to steal Doreen away, but you brush him off.

“Go on,” You chuckle, waving them away with a grin, “Go save the city, hopefully I’ll see you in English.”

“Oh, dont worry!” Doreen reples with her classic smile, front two teeth protuding just a bit more over her lower lip, “I wouldn’t dream of leaving you all alone in that class.”

She was telling the truth, she’d never lie to you, after all. You giver her one last wave goodbye, pulling put your phone as you check local police radios. Tomas had helped you get the stuff installed so you could still join along with what they did while you were in classes. It seemed that Doreen was going to be dealing with a small gang of boys who were terrorizing the squirrels in the park.

There was obviously a bit more to it than just that. Doreens squirrels could handle some nobody ruffians on their own… you were just excited to here all about the amazing adventure later today in English.
