There must be something in the water in Montreal that inspires musicians to create dreamy, chiffon bedroom pop grooves. We have our list of Montreal faves in that department, like Men I Trust, or MUNYA. And now we’ve added JORDANN to that roster, too! The musician writes songs that exude nostalgia and reminiscence. Perhaps not unexpectedly, Dragos Chiriac from Men I Trust lent a hand in mixing and mastering the artist’s debut singles, including I Revel In You and Ashore, which we egregiously missed out on a couple months prior. We’re feverishly in love with JORDANN’s most recent song, Business Solutions, on which he coos with the soft sensuous allure of Rhye over a bed of dreamy synths and funky bass. You know what I’m “thinkin’ of” right now? I’m wondrously pondering how blissfully inebriating this debut is, that’s what. Australian three piece daste. lands with a huge splash on debut single Thinkin’ Of, a dreamy warped, soulful simmering “lo-funk” jam, out on Mammal Sounds Records. Callum MacDonald, Braxton Tahi & Tyler Harden met in 2017 as session musicians. When they connected instantaneously, they decided to get together to write some tunes. We’re eternally grateful they made such a wise and prudent choice, because this troupe of songwriters, producers, and musicians has crafted a chillwavey funk ballad with a languorously sublime groove. It’s sort of like Yellow Days gone extra viscous and gooey on the funk and electro, with a hearty infusion of sweltering JMSN. daste.’s intoxicating debut is available now, here.

Young Yosef is a five piece based out of Berlin, and they’re about to become your favorite new disco pop troubadours. Get down to their debut single, Bruce Lee, a retro funk inflected, airy grooving confection awash in infectious nostalgia. The new outfit explores getting caught up in the past and not being able to handle change on the lead single from an upcoming debut album named YY they already have in the works. If Phoenix and Bee Gees wedded and went chill disco then fused with M83′s more recent work (ie. last album Junk), you might get some of this plucky glissading laid back glitz. As a child, I couldn’t help but be excited when I saw that the circus was back in town. But now that I’m older, the word “circus” tends to bring me mixed feelings, since I’m very much against animal exploitation and cruelty. But not an ounce of antipathy to be found in my heart when it comes to this song from Cocoa Futures, whose name might as well be “cocoa butter” considering the project’s velvety smooth cooing and the chiffon pop they offers up on Circus. The London outfit last dazzled us with their art funk minimalism and electro-pop on Sink In The Water. They’ve followed up that gem up with much panache, giving us a dreamy pop-soul waltz produced by Brendan Williams (GoGo Penguin, Dutch Uncles). Greg of Cocoa Futures notes: “‘Circus’ is about patience. Patience seems pretty boring, but it’s secretly banging. You know when you really want something but can wait for it? Birocratic is a Brooklyn producer and multi-instrumentalist whose real name is Brandon Rowan, and he’s already established himself a force in the scene these past few years thanks to a slew of original productions and remixes. The 24 year old artist has even been featured in videos from Buzzfeed and YouTube vlogger Casey Neistat, as well as supported artists like MNDSGN and Grammy nominee StarRo live. He kicks off 2018 with a groovy homage to 90′s house and 80′s funk named, fittingly, Extra Fresh. The luscious track even comes accompanied by a cheeky “infomercial” video for, what else, but minty mouth wash. Get down to Birocratic’s robust basslines on his chill disco and glam house jam. Birocratic is also known for his brilliant live shows. He dazzles the crowd with his instrumental skills on bass guitar, keyboards, finger-drumming, and more, allowing him to bring his experimental jazz, hip hop, and house records to life in real time. We head back across the Pacific to the land of the Kiwis for a snazzy grooving jam from La Felix. The producer takes us to cloud nine with I Wanna Know, a sublime electronic confection that fuses chill disco with electro soul. Tell me you aren’t swinging your hips side to side to this one. Iridescent synths meld with plucky warbles and a sumptuous bass line, giving us a delectable French house banger reminiscent of a mellowed out Daft Punk jamming out with Tom Misch and HONNE. Sunny psychedelia abounds on Cones’ latest single Whatever You’re Into, making us fully aware that the LA by way of SF duo is what we’re fully into, especially after earlier songs like Back In The Brain and Echoes On received florid praise from us, too. The brothers, both of whom formerly played in Eleanor Friedberger’s band, never fail to move us with their gooey warm groove and a silky smooth synthpop sheen. Whatever You’re Into’s funky breeze and plush velour bring to mind Toro Y Moi and Electric Guest, but with an extra dose of chiffon languor and a misty strut.
