Lucky us, we get to kick off our weekend with this sleek swooner, Lucky You, from FEiN. In fact, everything’s more than fine and dandy now that the alternative duo, forged in the “harsh winters” of Southern California, have unleashed their igneous new jam. Brandon Woodward and Luke Walton began their musical partnership while they were studying at the University of Southern California. You might recall how eager we were to share their music a few years ago when they released their debut EP, FEiN Times [Issue #1], which came accompanied by a creatively crafted, community-sourced zine, designed by Sarah Oh. FEiN went on to attain viral success on Spotify as well as Hype Machine with their hit single #Grownupz (which we’re proud to say we premiered, too). Their full length, Little Homes, followed in 2016. It was obvious straightaway how truly genuine and dedicated Woodward and Walton are to their artistry, which they so often pepper with a sly dose of witty humor, a welcome treat in a world where people often take themselves far too seriously. And now FEiN has taken that talent to a whole new level on quite possibly their best single yet.
Lucky You, which the pair self recorded and produced, is a masterstroke when it comes to genre thwarting brilliance. Torrid rock guitars, coiling psych synths, and resounding hip hop beats adorn the fiery resolute alt anthem. Electro-soul, electro-rock, R&B pop, alt electro, this one’s got it all, as well as a sweltering abundance of slick steamy vocals. In other words, Lucky You is as swag a swaggering song as can be. It’s like smoldering Opia gone Jack Garratt with a massive infusion of Jai Paul’s R&B funk.
The ever jocular and affable duo also shared the following fun facts and quotes with us to accompany Lucky You, further lifting our spirits on this fine (pun intended) Friday:
Fun Fact from Luke: This is my first time playing drums on a song. (You can tell because it's not as good as Brandon.)
Fun Fact from Brandon: There's a Peruvian flute hidden somewhere in this song.
Fun Fact from Brandon: This is my first time playing Lead Bass on a song.
Fun Fact from Luke's Guitars: We weren't played on this song.
Quote from Luke: "Shout out to Steve Duda for the endless hours of fun and frustration."
Quote from Brandon: "Shout out to Ed at Sweetwater for drying my tears with practical solutions."
Quote from Luke: "Ed also sent us candy. Thanks, Ed."
