The Golden Age of Black Music (1977-1988) 1988 R&B / Disco / Smooth Soul / Pop-Soul / Synth Funk / Quiet Storm
There's a pretty noticeably thick dividing line between the years of 1979 and 1982 in this final entry in Atlantic Records' trilogy that reminisces on nearly three decades of its black music catalogue. Sonically, the line represents an ongoing transition towards electronification, when, following disco's demise, an onslaught of music that was chiefly made with synthesizers arrived. And perhaps this changeover wouldn't have felt so stark had this comp actually included some songs on it from 1980 and 1981 that incorporated both electronic and non-electronic instruments alike in equal measure too, but with those years fully excluded from this program, the leap from a song like Chic's almost fully non-electronic "Good Times" to The System's entirely electronic synth-funk delight of "You Are in My System" is pretty jarring. It's like going from board games to Atari.But there was a whole confluence of many other factors that were taking root around this same time too that would prove detrimental to Atlantic's own cachet as a juggernaut purveyor of black music. Coinciding with electronification was also an economization of production. No longer was a full band required to make a piece of music. With affordable machines able to synthesize the sounds of multiple instruments, bands could downsize, or not really be bands at all. Creating music also didn't necessitate so many hours in a traditional studio, which is something that a big label like Atlantic could typically accommodate for, and with less of that studio time required to record a synthesizer-heavy piece of music, smaller labels with significantly less cashflow could move in on Atlantic's territory with a lot more ease.
