JILY CHALLENGE December 2021 @jilychallenge | @ncoincidences vs. @chierafied â thank you, Chie, for all the encouragement and hearts âĄâĄ
Winter + "itâs new yearâs eve, weâre the only ones drinking alone at the pub and you've been staring at me for the last half an hour. how about we be each others new years kiss?"
âHave you ever had a New Year's Kiss?â James asked Lily, and that was the second thing he said after approaching her.
âNope.â
That brought out a spark, a gleam of mischief in his eyes. âWell, then, let's get you one!â
âYes! Oh, don't make that face,â James said with a false expression of indignation. âIt's New Year's! Kissing will make it much less boring than it is now.â
âI don't think so,â Lily said, biting her lip unsurely. It wasn't a bad idea, per se, just⌠it sounded not quite up her alley.
Her nose twitched as James leaned closer, his strong woody perfume permeating the air.
âNot even one try, Lily?â James looked at her with such a winning gaze, said her name with such a charm,âhe rarely called her by her first nameâthat Lily was momentarily lost for words.
She searched his face. He was so close. The gold flecks in his hazel eyes were brighter than ever. âYou are strangely insistent on getting me a New Year's Kiss,â she pointed out, finally, instead of answering.
His eyes shifted. âWell. It's been a stressful year for all of us, but especially you. Not to mention how uncertain the future is. I thought it would be a fun way to start the next year. You know, new year, new experience.â He took a sip from his goblet, smiled. âBesides, this is our last year, Head Girl.â
âWhich means it's my last chance to get a New Year's kiss in Hogwarts?â she said, her lips stretching into a small smile to mirror his.
âYou got it.â
Lily looked down at her goblet, golden, containing a pink punch, as she considered the idea once more.
It was quite thoughtful of James to think of a fun distractionâbecause that's what this was, wasn't it? or was it something more?âfor her; to have noticed how stressful these past days were. But then, heâd proven to be quite observant and a good friend this past year, so it wasnât all that odd.
Lily just felt touched.
A New Year's kiss, she said in her mind. She pursed her lips, lifted her eyes to look at the partying crowd. Would she kiss one of them? Which one?
... was she considering the idea, after all?
Admittedly, New Year's kissing was something she hadn't tried before, and it sounded both harmless and excitingâthe type of fun she liked. She looked back up at James, and found she couldnât resist his insisting.
âAlright,â said Lily. James beamed, his cute dimples deepening. He looked dazzling and dizzyingly handsome in his burgundy robes, she thought, and felt her smile widen.
âWell then!â he said excitedly and set down his goblet on a passing server's tray and offered her a hand. âWe have around three minutes left for New Year's and there are about a hundred witches and wizards here, so we'll have to decide very quickly whom you will kiss and make sure they agree.â
She nodded and accepted his hand, feeling a silly feeling snuggling her sternum. His skin was warm and the hand largely enveloped her much smaller one, squeezing it as he cut through the crowd. He started to discreetly point people out. There were a lot of people invited to Slughorn's party, including older people as well as magical beings, and James seemed to know most of themâif he didn't, Lily did.
But James seemed to be the most up to date on the gossip: which witch was dating which wizard, which wizard didn't date, which wizard or witch wasn't the best kisser, and so on. She laughed at most of his descriptions, which, while being apt, were not the most forgiving ones.
As they were short on time, it was best to play the game of elimination, where they quickly crossed out the older wizards and witches they saw. And strangers of their age as well, as Lily opted to search for a familiar face instead: a friend that wasn't already snogging someone or in a relationship.
Most of her friends seemed to be rather engaged in making out and James' friends were nowhere to be found, coincidentally.
Yet, those who were single were people she'd rather not kiss, or she found them not her type. Well, except one charming French wizard from Beauxbatons, but before she could approach him, he locked lips with the girl beside him.
âI didn't know you were such a picky person,â James commented, but not unkindly. They'd crossed out almost everyone in the dungeon, so he was right.
âWhat can I say? The Head Girl wants only the best for herself,â she said lightly. But her chest felt tight. There were only around fifty seconds left.
âWould I qualify?â said James, suddenly, his tone light-hearted but his gaze solemn, conveying that the offer was serious.
Lily stared at James. His silky mop of hair swept the rim of his golden glasses as he stared back, a hint of nervousness showing in the way he readjusted his glasses and played with his hair.
She wondered absently, amidst the rapid whirling of her mind, what it would be like to run her hands through his dark hair, to mess them up further.
âOf course you would,â she blurted, then.
James' lips parted. âAre you sure?â he said, like he couldn't believe it.
The crowd started to chant. Thirty seconds. Half a minute.
Lily swayed closer, setting her hands gently on his broad chest. âYes.â
He swallowed, (she stared at his throat) but quickly wound his arms around her waist.
Fifteen.
Her eyes roved over James once more. The golden lining on his collar. His sharp jaw, the smooth skin. The way the tips of his ears were flushed pink.
Eight.
They leaned closer, James moving down and Lily arching up, and as she got a whiff of his scent once more, her heart started to pound in her ears, almost louder than the crowd's chanting.
Five! Four! Three!
They kissed at two seconds before midnight, soft lips pressing together, slow and warm. Her hands held his face, her fingers stroking the sharp lines of his jaw and beyond his ear, the short tufts of hair. He caressed her hair, the warm skin of her neck. The kiss was short but bright, and her lips tingled as it ended and they seperated. Her eyes half-closed. James gazed at her, eyes crinkled, his cheeks flushed.
âHappy New Year,â he whispered, hoarse, with a smile as bright as a firecracker.
âYou too,â she said, pressing closer and winding her arms around his back, hugging him with warmth in her heart.
Curious about 1. & 21. on the fic writer ask list! Hope you'll have a lovely weekend in store, take care! đđ
Hi, Chie! đ Thanks for the asks. And I hope you have a wonderful weekend too! I know I'm just going to be writing and sleeping.
1. Is there a specific location where you write the most?
I just answered this one here!
21. When do you come up with the title for your stories?
I'm probably an anomaly here, but at the very beginning! A few of my fics like Salt Air and Retribution were actually born from the titles, in terms of what feeling/atmosphere they convey. But even otherwise, I pretty much think of a title right after I jot down the plot or start writing. It's a part of the process that I actually really enjoy. There's something super cool to me about knowing that this title is going to be the identifier for all the words in the fic.

âYou havenât laughed in a long time, and I guess I was staring âcause I forgot how that looked like.â Also I hope you know you're just asking to drown in the Quicksand here my love save yourself
Bahaha Iâll just ask for prompts to stop coming in before I drown, donât worry ;) I wish I couldâve written you a better one, Chie, but have some Inuyasha grumbling over Sesskags relationship x
---
Inuyasha didn't like it one bit.Â
Scratch that, he hated it.
This...thing, that Kagome had entered into with Sesshoumaru raised his hackles and sent a shiver of disgust down his spine. No matter how much he'd tried to dissuade her though, Kagome seemed pretty set on 'trying out' whatever she and Sesshoumaru had become, like putting on a pair of new shoes.
Inuyasha picked at his teeth while he mused, watching them sitting at the base of a tree near a river.Â
Sure he'd found it pretty hellishly weird for her to enter a relationship with his half brother, especially considering their history, but in the end, this was Kagome's business and relationship, not his.
He'd definitely come to this mature conclusion on his own and not had to have Kagome yell at him or anything.
At least there was an upside to the bizarreness of seeing his murderous brother with his ex. And that was Sesshoumaru's signals being completely missed or misinterpreted by the ignorant miko.
Right then his brother was coiling youki out, attempting to wrap it around Kagome and seeking her acceptance of his energy in a very 'let's mate soon' signal. Inuyasha would barf were it not for Kagome swatting the youki away like an annoying wasp at a picnic, too focused on sewing Rin's torn yukata.Â
Inuyasha burst into laughter, grinning ferally. Bastard deserved it.Â
Dark, hooded eyes snapped to him, narrowing.Â
Inuyasha made a rude gesture in return.Â
"Inuyasha~" a light-hearted tone chirped, instantly filling him with dread. Ah, but the subjugation beads had long been taken off. Damn war flashbacks. "Quit picking fights with your brother," she said instead.Â
"He started it," the hanyou grumbled, stretching against the tree he currently lounged in and watching Sesshoumaru with a standard glare.Â
"Ah- shoot..."
Iron irritated his nose, and he frowned. A tiny pinprick of blood beaded on Kagome's finger, most likely caused by the needle. She always was clumsy. Before she could lift the injury to her lips however, Sesshoumaru grasped her hand- closing his mouth over the bleeding digit.
Kagome gaped and blushed, pressing a hand to his chest and hissing something. Giving a languid lick, Sesshoumaru moved his lips to her ear and quietly muttered a reply.
She stiffened and Inuyasha briefly thought he'd get to see her slap the arrogant prick- before she abruptly burst into loud laughter.
Bushy brows lifted, Inuyasha's golden eyes flying wide. He stared, completely frozen stiff.Â
Even after her mirth died down and Sesshoumaru rose, taking his leave to go attend to his duties- Inuyasha remained still as a statue, reeling.Â
"Why are you looking at me like that, weirdo?"
Jolting, Inuyasha dazedly re-focused on Kagome, who now stared up at him with both hands planted on her hips.Â
Grunting, he awkwardly scratched the bridge of his nose. âYou havenât laughed in a long time, and I guess I was staring âcause I forgot how that looked like.â
"Oh."
White ears flattened against his skull. It's because of him.Â
He could see it, he wasn't stupid.Â
Kagome fidgeted, not wanting to call attention to it. She always tried not to flirt or be openly happy with Sesshoumaru around the hanyou, probably fearing it would hurt him or something despite their amicable breakup.
She really was a damn saint. Stupid dumbass. Stretching both arms behind his head and leaning back against the tree again, Inuyasha perched a leg on his knee. "I'm glad," he grumbled, the words pushed reluctantly out.
Her scent instantly brightened, and Kagome smiled up at him. Her shoulders drooped as though relieved. "Thank you, Inuyasha."
"Yeah, yeah," he waved her off dismissively. "Go get me more ninja food if you're grateful."
"You'll get it at dinner with everyone else," Kagome said flatly, turning on her heel.
"Kagome."
She paused. "Yes?"
"...If he hurts you I'll kill him."
Smiling, Kagome continued walking. "I don't believe he will, but thanks. That's sweet of you."
Inuyasha snorted, watching his best friend leave while experiencing gross warm fuzzies. Urgh. Honestly, if someone had told him his life would become so strange, with entangled relationships and his hated half brother becoming a needed ally, he'd have told them to get their head examined.Â
Now though, he was kinda looking forward to seeing whatever madness would happen next.

JILY CHALLENGE ( @jilychallengeâ )Â | @lovesickjilyâ vs @chierafiedâ
"you have horrible taste in festival snacks, the clear winner is a pot of pringles and all you've got is some crappy cereal bars in here"
ffn or ao3
***
If James Potter had a dollar for every time someone offered him drugs, he swore heâd have twice the money in his bank account.
That should have been a given because hello? Music festival? Home to Instagram influencers and modern-day hippies alike? James shouldnât have been surprised at the turn out.
Still, he didnât think it would have been that bad.
Sure, the music was decent enough, but no one had warned him of strangers after strangers offering him their equally strange drugs. No one had warned him that once the sun went down, heâd see dark silhouettes hunched over bushes and smell what could have only been natural body waste.
And least of all, no one warned him that once he returned to his tent, heâd be greeted by a stranger sprawled out amidst the snacks that Sirius had been so insistent on bringing. A pretty stranger, no less.
She might have looked like the other girls who James had passed upâ glitter decorating her cheeks like they were a cake and sprinkled atop her hair like snow stuck to a personâs clothesâ but something about her set her apart from everyone else. It could have been her silky red hair, or those sparkling green eyes, but whatever it was, all James knew was that she was gorgeous. Supermodelâ more than a supermodelâ gorgeous.Â
âIs this your tent?â she asked, her mouth full of what James could only assume to be Siriusâs snacks. No hi, or hello, no greeting. Hell, not even an apology for trespassing on his propertyâ nevermind the fact that the turf that the festival was on technically didnât belong to himâ and yet that, in combination with the crumbs decorating the perimeter of her lips, still made her look pretty.
He leaned against the pole holding up the tent, ignoring the smell of the unholy combination of drugs and alcohol wafting from the tents besides his, and cocked an eyebrow at her. âIs this yours?â
âObviously not. Iâve actually got some taste buds.â
âAnd I donât?â
She sat up, sticking her hands out to steady herself, and it was apparent that the readily-supplied stock of alcohol at the festival had gotten to her. "You have horrible taste in festival snacks, the clear winner is a pot of pringles, and all you've got are some crappy cereal bars in here.â
Right. Of course. Out of all the people that could have raided his and Siriusâs tent, it had to be someone critical of the poor, innocent snacks sitting in a messy heap on the floor. Even if he agreed that the snacks werenât the best.
âWould you believe me if I said that I wasnât in charge of the snacks?â
She hummed, pondering his wonders for a moment. âThat would be a relief. Otherwise I would have questioned what evil entity in their right mind would give someone so fit a horrible taste in junk food.â
At his age, he shouldnât have been so affected by someone complimenting his appearances, unable to help the light smirk forming on his face. âThink that horrible entity does exist.â He nodded towards the pile of her empty wrappers. âYou practically ate all the snacks we packed.â
âThe food here is horribly overpriced, and if not that, itâs swarming with flies.â She grimaced, plucking another Pringle from the box and shoving it into her mouth. âIâm terribly hungry, so do you really blame me?â
âFair enough,â James said, and he decided that there was no harm in letting himself into the tent. It was his tent after all. âMove over.â
She complied, her hand still gripping the box of Pringles. With eyes greener than the fields and constellations of mascara dotting her cheeks, she suspiciously peered up at him. âWhatâs your name? Oh!â She clapped her hands together. âDonât tell me. You look like⌠a Harry.â
âA Harry?â James asked, amused by the drunken rambles of an equally drunk girl. He leaned back, letting his body rock the chair with his weight. âMy grandpa was named Henry, but no. Itâs James. Potter.â
âJames,â she echoed, and he liked the way the words fell from her lips. âI guessed a Prince name, so I suppose I wasnât too far off.â
âYou think Iâm a prince?â
âWell, are you? Otherwise, I think Iâll have to leave a message for the Queen and tell her that Iâve found her long-lost son.â
âTell her Iâve run away for good. Avoiding responsibilities and all that.â
âObviously you arenât here to court noble women.â
âMaybe I am,â James said, flashing her a slight cocky grin, and he bowed, outrageously curtsying her. âMy lady.â
She laughed. âYouâre bold, courting me when you donât know my name.â
ââCourse I do. The name gods have told me that itâsâŚâ He looked at her for help.
âLily,â she finished.
âLily,â he repeated, liking the sound of it rolling off his lips. âYou a flower, then?â
She sighed, leaning back. âMaybe. Iâve got a sister named Petunia if that helps my case.â
James shrugged. âDepends on if you want to be a flower or not.â
âWhat I want right now,â she started, flopping her head back onto one of the pillows littering the tent floor and holding up the now-empty can of Pringles. âAre better snacks.â
âI reckon if you raid one of the other gazillion tents, youâll be able to get that.â
âThat, unfortunately, means Iâd have to get up.â She buried her head further into the pillow as if to prove her point. âIs this yours?â
âI mean, it is my tent.â
âThatâs the wrong answer. Itâs mine now.â
James smiled, no doubt amused even more than he would have been had he chosen to stay out to listen to Siriusâs horrible interpretations of the EDM beats that were currently blaring throughout the air. âTake good care of it, yeah? Itâs my most prized possession.â
âIs it really?â
âNah,â he replied, shaking his head. âThere was a pack of pillows on sale at the store the other day.â
She laughed. âYouâre supposed to be wooing me here.â
âThought I was. Youâre not into thrifty blokes? Thought youâd be the type, seeing as weâre at a music festival and all.â
âAnd yet weâre not participating. Why is that so?â
âBecause I found you raiding my tent and eating all the snacks?â James replied, and she let out a huff, weakly and terribly chucking a pillow that sent his athletic side into tears. âCouldnât help but get sideswept.â
She sat up. âWhat do you say we get out there, then?â
He grinned. âLead the way.â
***
In theory, it shouldnât have been so hard to lead someone around, to take them by their hand and show them the way.
In reality, it was the exact oppositeâ so bloody hard. Because even if said someone was the prettiest girl that James had ever seen in his life, it was really hard to maneuver the two of them around throngs of people who were all out of it. Thank the bloody drugs.
As they got closer and closer to the main stage, James careful to step over what he hoped could have only been throw up and not something else, the music grew louder and louder. And, apparently, Lilyâs excitement grew as well.Â
âI love this song!â she exclaimed over the music, moving her body to the beat.
âYeah? You a fan?â
She shook her head. âIâve never heard of them in my life, but you canât deny how good they are!â
Lily swayed to the beat, grabbing his hands to make him move along to the rhythm. If he was being honest, he didnât think heâd find himself in the company of another person who wasnât Siriusâ not tonight, at least. Perhaps it was the alcohol from earlier that day, or maybe it was the adrenaline that came with the thrill of being one among an entire crowd of people jumping and dancing and throwing their heartsâ and stomachâs contents, to the slight disgust of Jamesâ out, but James didnât think he felt so alive.
WIth everyone singing along to the song, James couldnât help but to join in, screaming along with them and watching Lily jump around. And it wasnât planned. It just sort of⌠happened.
Even surrounded by people, it still somehow felt like just the two of them, and he kissed her. Spontaneously. Hands looping around her waist and pulling her to his chest, James pressed his lips around hers, slowly and tentatively, before it escalated into something a little more.
Her lips tasted saltyâ perhaps from the Pringles that sheâd eatenâ but he didnât mind a bit, determined to deepen the kiss. The action seemed to elevate every one of his senses, pounding at his ears even harder as the music seemed to grow louder.
And when theyâ he didnât even know who had done it firstâ pulled away, he didnât think he was letting her go anytime soon.
***
The bright, sudden sun jolted James awake.
âRise and fucking shine,â Sirius announced, walking in through the flap of the tent and making a beeline towards the cooler.Â
James groaned. âFuck off.â
âI was about to, actually. It reeks of a potential relationship in here,â Sirius said with a grimace, and satisfied with the water bottle in his hand, he turned back around. âWeâre leaving in ten.â
And then it was James and Lily alone once again.
Lily shifted besides James, having spent the night in the tent with him, and to keep Sirius away, she promised that sheâd pay him back for all his snacks that sheâd eaten. She rolled over, snuggling herself into the crook of his neck. âGood morning. Did you get a good nightâs sleep?â
âAs good that sleep could be with the bloody mosquitoes flying around. Swear I had to swat off at least a dozen for my lady.â
âAnd who is your lady?â
WIth her tucked against his person, it was obvious who that title belonged to. âAm I being too presumptuous?â
âNo,â she hummed. âBut Iâve got a massive headache right now, and I donât think the flutters in my stomach are helping any matters.â
âAh. Thatâs my bad. Is there anything that I can do to help?â
âWellâŚâ she started, looking over at him with a light glint in her eyes. âThere is something.â
âYeah?â
âYeah.â
âAnd would that involve maybe seeing you again?â
âOnly if you get better snacks next time,â she said, and James let out a chuckle, letting his hand fly down to hers and giving it a slight squeeze.
Do u know any fics where James used to do these kind things for Lily and she starts to fall for him but one day, he stops carrying her books and stuff and she realises its bc hes moved on? Basically, a good fic where Lily falls for james when he moves on? And theres a lot of pining? Thank uuu if u reply.
I know Iâve read a few fics that match this perfectly but Iâm still working on finding them. Here are a few other fics featuring pining and these two oblivious fools.
Sing a Reckless Serenade by @hiddenpolkadots
This is absolutely perfect and adorable and should be (probably is by now?) a Hallmark movie. Modern AU, fake dating, and excessive pining - what could be better? This focuses more on ânever admitted feelings/thought the other cared that muchâ than âgave up and moved onâ but I LOVED the writing and characters. One of my absolute favorite Jily authors to boot!
Inconvenient Daydreams by @chierafied
Iâm so glad I donât have to pick favorite Jily authors, come to think of it, because that would be a Problem. This is a beautiful and amusing âoh yikesâ moment when Lily is forced to admit to herself that she might be feeling something new for James Potter. So lovely and cute
Trim by @chierafied (wow what a shock)
Another adorable small moment - James may be finally treating Lily like just another good friend, but she minds that more than she would like. Excellent dialogue and characters as usual!
Opposites by @lxlypctter
Lily didnât really just how highly James thinks of her, especially her smarts. A well-done sixth year piece about the very beginnings of some interesting realizations
