I can't wait to hear more about your dad's reactions to BBC Sherlock. I'm crying!
Glad youāre enjoying it! FYI we ended up doing our series 3 watch and drunk live-blog-along back in April. The madness is all filed under #too bad moriartyās dead though. I have a few longer posts in the works with other insights I got from the watchalong, and every once in a while Iāll have an interaction worth blogging about. And just as a teaser, if weāre very very lucky, we might one day get some original dadlock material which will of course be going right here.
What are you talking about? Your face is super cute! As is your dress and gorgeous hair of course. Happy birthday Alison! May you become even more fabulous everyday this year!! <3

So there's a Fic questionnaire that I've come across and would love to hear your answer to. Specifically, "Are there any things that might have happened in any of your stories, but you changed them at the last minute? (So-and-so dies, they don't actually kiss, main character has long extended ballet-based dream sequence, etc.)" and "which of your fics have the most "you" In it, however you define it"? Thank you!!
Hmm. Those ARE interesting questionsā¦Iām not sure my answers will be equally so, but here goes:
Are there any things that might have happened in any of your stories, but you changed them at the last minute?
A few, yes. Most notably, there was not even an inkling of a murderous feline in the original storyboard for Colors, and Basil the homicidal house cat was a last minute addition based on a reader comment in a previous chapter. And he turned out to be a fairly fun character to include and gave me a more interesting case for Sherlock to solve in the chapter where he first appeared. I also initially planned to drag out the drama a bit before their first kiss after the post-reveal confrontation when John finds Sherlockās color key. I had almost been convinced to cliffhanger that chapter, but ultimately decided that Iād waited 50K words to get to that kiss and I wasnāt going to mess up the momentum. Iām still happy with that choice.
Initially, Relative Distance originally ended with an additional chapter that flashed forward a year and saw Mary and Roger dropping off Addy at 221B for the weekend. It was cute, but I ultimately decided (with the help of my beta team) that the fic ended in the right place without it and it didnāt add anything to the story so it got chopped.
Take My Breath Away had two additional cannon-based scenes in the first draft, but I felt like they didnāt add anything to the narrative and I think āretellingā too much cannon can be a recipe for boredom. So I slashed them.
The two mini fics in the All Our Days series were initially much longer than the final products. Those fics were an experiment for me, a way to see if I could go small and pare down a story to its essential elements and fight my natural urge to USE EVERY WORD I KNOW. That was a fun experiment and Iām proud of those those two itty bitty fics.
As for which fic is the most āmeā, I have to go with Colors.Ā The urge to write that fic hit me out of the blue, and I sat down and wrote it from beginning to end and adhered to my weekly posting schedule without fail. It was a little impulsive, arguably too ambitious for a first project, passionately conceived and relentlessly agonized over. Which is pretty much how I do EVERYTHING in my life, so it was business as usual. I didnāt know if I had novel length fiction in me, and that story helped me realize that I did. I remain terribly proud of it and if I never wrote another word Iād still feel like I accomplished something.
That got a lot longer than I meant it to (see what I mean about using all the words??), but it was fun to think about. Thanks so much for asking!
July!!
