Gabe had a slight limp this morning so they got some special treatment. The limp is worse this afternoon, so they’re spending the night in the crate inside, and I’ll put them in the mini-coop (which is currently inside the main chicken run so they won’t be too lonely) so that they can’t get picked on or do anything too strenuous while I am out of town for work. Hopefully it won’t be too long a day and I can leave at lunch time to head home and check on them.
she will do anything for a snacc. Me too.
Next clutch of eggs has gone into lock down! On day 18 I have a dozen good looking eggs. I hope I'll have better luck this time now that I have a handle on the humidity. The last lot needed a bit of stuffing around & I ended up having to move the whole incubator into a different part of the house to get the humidity to stay up, so this time the last candling & removal from the egg Turner included the move to the more humid room.
The five chicks from the last hatch are almost fully feathered, and have had a couple of days out in the sun. The weather has been super warm so they haven't really needed the heat plate for a while. I'll soon set up the mini brooder so it's ready for the new clutch and by the time they're ready for the big brooder, the bigger chicks will be living outside.
I got blue laced wyandottes so I have my fingers crossed for at least one really good looking girl from this clutch.
There have been a few changes in the chicken coop.
I gave Hesper and Pyro the hylines to mum, lost Lilli and nano, and all the babies were roosters so I was only able to keep one. I'd love more, but I'm just not set up for it. So I had Zephyr, the araucana/silkie who lays pretty green eggs and crows, and I kept scruff- the lavender araucana in the photos. He is a real character, super friendly and prefers to eat from hands. Hand food is best food.
But that meant that I was able to pick up a few new chooks! I got a spangled hamburg pullet (the black and white one), she's super cute and hamburg's are funky as, they look like they could almost be pigeons. The reddish one is a big leghorn hen - well sort of. The guy they came home is trying for a red leghorn, they're beautiful birds but not "show standard", they're a funky little project. So she was part of that project. She's been bred from and is currently going through a moult, apparently she goes broody which is uncommon for a leghorn but doesn't bother me.
And finally the lighter girl with the dark wattles. She's very motherly with the hamburg pullet which is sweet, but funny because although she didn't raise them, she was used to incubate the hamburg eggs. Anyway she's an interesting one, I just wanted her because she's pretty, but apparently she's the result of an unintentional breeding between a silver pheasant and an English game hen. So I will probably never be able to breed from her, but I just can't get over how pretty she is.

I don't have any decent photos of him but my lil leghorn roo has started to crow at only 10 weeks! He has the sweetest little baby crow ❤️🐓
This little hamburg decided to hatch upside down, which I only realised right before I had to leave for work. It hatched out fine, apparently spent its first day doing laps around the incubator, and is now a very healthy and energetic chick getting up to some serious mischief.
