We begin to gather over the course of Season 3, and to some extent in Season 4, that Carmy was a favorite son of Chef Terry. Maybe the favorite son, and a designated heir; executive chef Andrea Terry saw fit to send him to study at Noma, and he later served as her CDC. Other chef sons of this mother included Luca the Bear and Adam Shapiro and Chef Joel McHale.

Chef Terry gave Carmen, as she most often calls him, his Emotional Support Spoon, as well as many other culinary and restaurateur lessons, all given with an open hand by the good restaurant mother who believed in him and lifted him up in a way his bio mom never could. She seems to have warm feelings toward him. She didn't let him end the night of the funeral without a long and generous talk in which he actively sought life and career advice from her, and she asked that he call her Andrea "next time we meet."

Anyway, in the episode called "Children," if you zoom in on the web articles about the end of Ever, they equate the closure of "Terry's masterpiece" with the possible death of "fine dining" in Chicago.

The solution to this gap is Carmy, Chef Terry's culinary son and heir, and Syd, Carmy's culinary and romantic soulmate. Chef Terry has tacitly blessed Syd by eating Eggo waffles and frozen pizza in her kitchen in the middle of the night while drinking and dancing to "Laid." This is yet another narrative "wedding" that hits a lot of family tropes. Carmen has been brutalizing himself above all to get Syd the star she once thought she wanted. It is indeed a pretty good restaurant! But Syd no longer wants stars, she just wants Carm healthy and calm and safe and not trying to run himself into blades. She wants her family to be calm and happy and secure. She wants to not feel lonely in a crowd even with Carmy at her side. For what's worth, when Carmy is freezing her out at Ever, in the visions that accompany his increasing stress, there are two separate instances where Sydney is paired with Andrea Terry, and another instance where footage of Marcus is paired with footage or Syd.

Nonetheless, by season 4, the union of the Ever family and the Bear family is complete. The two staffs are now in a committed relationship, with Chef Luca the Bear all but on staff and in increasingly tight relationships with Sydney, Marcus, and Tina, while Chef Jess and Garrett and Rene are part of Richie's new front of house family, with an especially warm bond between Richie and Chef Jesse. As Carmy yelled devotedly in the finale, "we have the right team in place now!"

Long story short: Carmy is a guy who serves at the pleasure of beautiful women who run three-star restaurants. I think he's going to be away from the whole city of Chicago when it happens, I think the SydCarmy marriage will still be on the downlow, I think he will have no ownership stake, not work there, and do no publicity other than stray mentions of "cofounder Carmen Berzatto blah blah." Those stars belong to Sydney and Natalie and Richie. But as far as the partners are concerned, those stars belong to Mikey and Carmy and Uncle Jimmy, who were the ones who all gave so much to make the restaurant possible. And for Chef Terry, we can see and she can see that she left a legacy that includes the survival of "fine dining" in Chicago, through the establishment and perpetuation of her restaurant childrens' lovely family bistro, headed by another singular-but-connected transcendent and inspiring female chef.

They carefully arranged all the scenes at Ever so we did not entirely understand that Carmy is Andrea Terry's son and heir, but it's true.
