Charles Walters - High Society (1956) So this is a musical version of The Philadelphia Story. The plot is pretty much the same by you add some songs and replace the cast of Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn with Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly. Oh man, it just isn't as good. It's bad when you are watching a movie, and it's perfectly ok in its own terms but as you watch you wish you were watching the other version, and that happened here several times. There's nothing wrong with the music itself, mainly by the great Cole Porter with the presence of Louis Armstrong as himself to add some fun to the proceedings. However what the musical numbers do here is cut the fast-paced banter from the original story to get these slower interludes stuck in the middle. Then we get to the actors. Grace Kelly does a fine job, she doesn't have the verve of Hepburn but she does make up for it with sheer charm and loveliness, she's a mesmerizing screen presence. Sinatra doesn't really have the "aw shucks!" talent of Stewart but is ok, again has a great screen presence. Lastly we get Bing Crosby, and he's no Cary Grant, also his character gets a couple of para-pedophile lines and a song in the film which just make him creepy. In the end, Crosby it the only one of the three who isn't great but none of them are as great as the original cast... Oh well, if you can choose watch Philadelphia Story instead, but if this is on TV or something you can safely watch it.
