Reception. The AllMusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 4Ā½ stars and stated:āElla and Louis is an inspired collaboration, masterminded by producer Norman Granz. Both artists were riding high at this stage in their careers, and Granz assembled a stellar quartet of Oscar Peterson (piano), Buddy Rich (drums), Herb Ellis (guitar) and Ray Brown (bass). Equally inspired was the choice of material, with the gruffness of Armstrongās voice blending like magic with Fitzgeraldās stunningly silky delivery. Outstanding are Irving Berlinās āCheek to Cheekā and āIsnāt This a Lovely Day,ā and everything else works like a dream, with the golden star going to the Gershwin brothersā āThey Canāt Take That Away
At home with Louis and Lucille Armstrong
Born in New Orleans and beloved for his music across the globe, Louis Armstrong was used to life on the road. āHomeā typically meant the closest hotel room to his next gig.
When he fell in love and married former Cotton Club dancer Lucille Wilson, Louis was finally convinced to set down roots in New York City.
The Armstrongs bought their home in the Corona neighborhood of Queens, NY in 1943, making history in more ways than one.
Despite redlining and segregation, the couple were among a small but important wave of Black families that owned their homes in New York. Corona and East Elmhurst wereĀ among the fewĀ neighborhoods to welcome Black residents.
Louis lived in the house until his passing in 1971. Lucille devoted her widowhood to her late husbandās legacy. She made sure that their home would be bequeathed to the city and turned into a museum for the public.
Today, the Louis Armstrong House Museum (@louisarmstronghouse) carries on Louisās legacy as a founding figure of jazz.
In 2023, LAHM opened the Louis Armstrong Center, a permanent home for the Armstrongsā 60,000-piece archive, with a venue for performances, lectures, and films.
āThe programs weāve developed, from oral histories and artist residencies to trumpet classes and justice arts, are rooted in the values Louis and Lucille lived: excellence, equity, and joy,ā says Executive Director Regina Bain.
Today In History Daniel Louis Armstrong nicknamed "Satchmo", "Satch", and "Pops", was an American trumpeter and vocalist. He was among the most influential figures in jazz. Armstrong recorded the first of his āHot Fiveā and āHot Sevenā recordings on this date November 11, 1925. These recordings greatly influenced the direction of jazz music.
