The King Who Died From a Doorframe
King Charles VIII of France met one of history's most unexpected royal ends. In 1498, the 27-year-old king was walking through the Château d'Amboise to watch a game of jeu de paume—an early version of tennis—when he slammed his head into a low stone doorframe. The blow seemed minor at first, and Charles continued to watch the match as if nothing had happened. But just hours later, he collapsed and died, likely from a brain hemorrhage caused by the blow.
While the head injury has long been blamed, modern historians and medical researchers have suggested a more complex explanation. It has been hypothesized that Charles died from severe brain injuries that may have been linked to an underlying epileptic condition triggered or worsened by the impact, even though he was not known to have suffered seizures before that day.
Whatever the exact cause, his shocking death ended the senior branch of the Valois dynasty. Because he left no surviving children, the French crown passed to his cousin, who became King Louis XII. A single accidental blow to a doorway changed the course of French history forever.
Charles VIII Breaks Through the Holy League in the Battle of Fornovo
On July 6, 1495, French King Charles VIII’s army ran into the Holy League near Fornovo, close to Parma in northern Italy. The League—made up of the Pope, Spain, Milan, Venice, and the Holy Roman Empire—had come together to push the French out after Charles invaded Italy earlier that year. What followed was a hard-fought battle as both sides tried to gain control of the Taro River valley.
The fighting was intense, with cavalry charges, skirmishes, and confusion across the battlefield. The French were outnumbered, but Charles VIII managed to break through and continue his retreat toward France with most of his army still intact. Both sides claimed some kind of success afterward, and historians still debate who really “won” the battle.
Even so, Fornovo didn’t end French involvement in Italy, but it did show how difficult it was to hold territory there. The Italian Wars would drag on for decades, with shifting alliances and constant conflict shaping the region.

June 30, 1470 – Birth of Charles VIII of France
On June 30, 1470, the future king of France, Charles VIII of France, was born at the Château d’Amboise. He was the only surviving son of King Louis XI and Charlotte of Savoy, inheriting the French crown at just 13 years old in 1483.
Charles VIII’s reign would later be marked by the strengthening of royal authority and his ambitious Italian campaign, which helped spark the Italian Wars. His invasion of Naples in 1494 reshaped European politics and drew major powers into prolonged conflict in Italy.
Despite his short life—he died in 1498 after an accident at Amboise—Charles VIII played a key role in transitioning France from medieval feudal politics toward early modern centralized monarchy.
