What is Character Motivation? Character motivation is the driving force behind every action a character takes. It is the reason behind their decisions and behaviors in various situations, propelling them toward their goals, through conflicts, or around obstacles. Without strong motivation, characters may appear flat or their actions arbitrary.

Why Important? Strong motivations enliven characters for the reader, clarifying their actions and making their decisions relatable. This understanding fosters a believable journey through the plot and fuels the conflicts that make stories compelling.

Kinds of Motivations

Internal vs. External Motivations

Internal Motivations: These motivations are personal and intrinsic to the character, such as desires, fears, beliefs, or emotional deficits. Examples include a desire for acceptance, proving oneself, or overcoming a personal fear.

External Motivations: These motivations arise from external forces that compel the character into action, like societal pressures or environmental challenges. Examples include quests for treasure, missions to save someone, or escaping danger.

Positive vs. Negative Motivations

Positive Motivations: Motivations stemming from positive desires like love, ambition, or justice. Characters with these motivations are driven to achieve beneficial or noble outcomes.

Craft Compelling Motivations

Know Your Characters

Backstory: Characters should have rich, detailed backgrounds that inform their current desires and fears based on past experiences.

Personality: Personality traits (optimistic, pessimistic, brave, cautious) significantly influence what motivates a character.

Set Clear Objectives

Specific and Measurable: Goals should be concrete, such as opening a bakery in their hometown, rather than vague ambitions like "being happy."

Achievable: Ensure the goals are realistic within the story’s context, challenging yet possible to attain.

Establish Stakes

What are the consequences if the character fails to achieve their objective? High stakes increase motivation, whether these are personal losses or broader dangers.

Show Growth and Change

Changing Motivations: As the story progresses, a character's motivations might evolve, reflecting their dynamic nature.

Internal Conflict: Characters may experience conflict when their motivations clash with their beliefs or values, adding depth and complexity.

Conclusion

I am absolutely in love with all these recent AdiYa scenes where Aditya has heart-wrenchingly honest conversations with Zoya. He speaks so freely of his emotions regarding the whole ordeal, because he knows that she would understand. In fact, she is the only one who could actually understand how he feels, because she is the only one who knows exactly how it feels.

The script writing for these scenes are absolutely terrific, and are pulling on all the right heartstrings. And add to that HC’s commendable acting skills and it’s an absolute treat in the form of a scene that leaves my heart achingly satisfied.

To add to that, I love the stark differences we get to see these days between Aditya’s equation with Pooja and his equation with Zoya. For starters, in Pooja’s diary it was mentioned that she had this constant need to ‘take care’ of Aditya. She also further questions herself and wonders if her love towards him simply limit itself to this want of hers that obviously comes from the fact that he is her best friend, who has had a rocky childhood. This piece of information shed immense light into depicting how their relationship functioned. Pooja craved the kind of love she gave to Aditya. But he couldn’t give Pooja the passionate, and meaningful kind of love that she desperately searched for in their relationship partly because he didn’t realize that she was in search for something like that in their relationship. Then, there is Zoya.

Zoya, much like Aditya, is used to being pampered and comes from a very sheltered and privileged lifestyle. She is also extremely naïve and easily fooled – a trait that annoyed the living daylights out of Aditya and many of the audience in the initial episodes. However, regardless of Aditya’s annoyance from the very beginning, he has had this almost reflexive need to protect her, and to take care of her. Something he didn’t feel as much towards Pooja possibly because he was used to being taken care of by her, and because of the mature demeanor that Pooja carried, which made her seem like a woman who didn’t need to be taken care of.  But Zoya, from her outward demeanor to her general naivety towards reality, shows her need to be taken care of by someone else, and thus highlighting on her high dependency on others. And Aditya could tell this from their very first meeting.

This factor in their relationship was highlighted again and again with incidents where he attempts to warn her regarding Mahi’s intentions, despite him being in his “ruin Zoya’s life” phase. And then we had multiple incidents where he saves her life- with no obvious gain other than an easing of his guilt – with hospital scenes that basically painted the fact that Aditya has an uncontrollable need to take care of Zoya, and keep her away from danger.

Another interesting thing to note here is the difference between Aditya and Yash with regards to how they treat Zoya. They both try to take care of Zoya, and do so successfully in all given situation, but it’s the way they do it that differ vastly. While Yash takes care of Zoya by shielding her from the world, Aditya takes care of Zoya by exposing her to the world, allowing her to grow into her own person, and only intervening when she seems to be stuck. This was so clearly portrayed when he watched her let out her heart in the middle of the street after finding out that Yash signed the divorce papers. He watched her quietly, letting her get all her emotions out, and then proceeded to not let her know about the truth behind the ring, as he knew that it would be too much for her to handle. He lets her crash and burn first, before intervening - that too only if she needs an intervention – and help her pick up her pieces.

Another incident that highlighted this further was when she began to distance herself from the world around her after her suicide attempt. He was the only and the first person to notice this. He saw her walking towards the path of depression, and despite him claiming to have done what he did, so his “entertainment” wouldn’t be ruined, it was as clear as day that his real intention was to help Zoya get out of the vortex she was unknowingly stepping into.

But what should also be noted is that it’s not just a constant state of Aditya taking care of Zoya. No. She, too, can be seen taking care of Aditya in various situations like when he came to her house after over-dosing on the allergy syrup. She patiently listened to him pour his heart out until he fell asleep. She was also the first one to call him out when he was too pre-occupied with his internal demons and lashing out at others right after Pooja’s demise. She told him the bitter truth at a time no one else dared to, and made him realize that he wasn’t fighting against the world; he was just fighting himself. For Aditya, this was crucial to know, because at the time, just like a child would, he was misplacing his anger and repressing his emotions as a way of coping. She had continued to offer him advice, again and again, which had proven to be valuable to him in fighting his internal battles. So in hindsight, they had helped each other, without even realizing, to overcome the stress and trauma of the very adversity that brought them together in the first place.

The Art of Writing Obsession: How to Create Deeply Compelling Characters

The human psyche is a labyrinth of light and shadow, but nothing illuminates the corridors of a character’s soul quite like the burning flicker of an obsession. Whether it is a detective’s fixation on a cold case or a gardener’s frantic need to grow a blue rose in a desert, these singular drives move a story from a mere sequence of events into a visceral experience. When you ground a narrative in the relentless gravity of an addiction, you are no longer just writing a plot.
