Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, June 18, 1972 | Trial 5-2 | Jack | Re: Stella, Basil, Katsuo; Attn: Everyone
Jack flashed a grin and a thumbs-up at Basil and Stella. They were getting out of here. Basil had it right - they couldnāt have done anything without the weight of the proof that they had now, and theyād only just discovered the pieces which connected everything. And now, Stella had pretty much firmly connected Timās murder with their bigger case, tying up all the loose ends. With everything theyād found, they had a clearer-cut case for the mastermind than for any murder theyād tried to solve so far. Theyād finally arrived at the truth. He, Stella, Makoto, Hoshi, and Basil⦠theyād done it.
āFor starters, we know the mastermind has to be female.ā
Jack held up a bloodstained and crumpled note, with some very notable frantic scribbles on it:Ā āOUR CITY, SHEāS TRYING TOāā
āThe entire Hopeās Peak 81st class was murdered. Their bodies were locked inside a meeting room on the second floor of Admin, full of the same bullet holes which theyād suffered weeks earlier. This note was in one of their hands. Beyond that, thoughā¦ā
Next, he pulled out a blue journal from the overstuffed backpack heād brought with him, which members of the class had seen him writing in the previous week.
āAtoshi-san and I, when she was still alive, got into Shirosai-sanās room. He had left some datalogs on his computer, which revealed that there was a freshman member of the 84th class who would be coming in a few weeks ahead of the main group - thatās us. Shirosai-san and Think-tank-chan had to leave before then, so they werenāt murdered⦠but, from a corrupted file in those datalogs, Atoshi-san and I were able to decipher enough to infer that that freshman was some sort of performer.ā
After folding the journal back up on his podium, he crossed his arms and grinned at this next point.
āThere arenāt any communications from inside this dome. Itās entirely cut off, besides the livestream. And, even if thereĀ were communications during that time, theyād give away the freshmanās position. Thereās a certain Net Idol who was mysteriously absent from her channels for a good period before we arrived here. It was newsworthy enough thatĀ I heard about it. Wouldnāt that be the perfect time to set this thing up? Plus, the numbers add up. Twenty people came in here. Two from the 84th class, Shirosai-san and Think-tank-chan. Eighteen freshmen, one of whom was making a re-entry after setting this up. As evidenced by the banquet sign, the 84th class was only expecting 17 of us to come at that time. It all adds together.ā
