seeing a thread on twitter talking about how refreshing and great and good pochita’s reappearance was, and theres still being like 2 out of the 30something replies acknowledging that a) this doesn’t seem so much like pochita trying to therapize for denji as it is pochita fairly bluntly saying “ok nice dream, moar pls”, ESPECIALLY in light of how big a toll denji’s pursuit of dreams is taking on the kid, b) on top of that just saying how god damn ominous the whole exchange was. like independent of context pochita’s arrival is punctuated by one stepping on the carcass of a dead crow, and ones home and (pet) family being engulfed in flames. AND LIKE C) To people who’ve read Fire Punch this internal cheerleader keeping the protagonist motivated to try and try and try and try and try does NOOOOOOOOOT REMIND US OF THE THERAPY WE THINK DENJI NEEDS.
Pochita isn’t MALICIOUS in this, but I think people aggrandizing his emotional intelligence over this are giving him too much faith. He has never seemed particularly wise, his good-faith assessment of Makima’s motives (while seemingly accurate) comes off more like projection. He’s more experienced than Denji in living but his motives are kinda immersed in his alienation from, like, all social interactions? thats the tragedy of it. Pochita is not a perfect arbiter of what’s healthy and the nature of his deal with Denji as a CONTRACT can risk tainting what would otherwise be a selfless desire for someone to live his own life. Denji gets to continue living on the condition that he always has something he Wants but doesn’t have yet. Which isn’t too hard to accomplish since thats Life for ya but it just seems unfair when put in those terms. When it comes to dreams theres never enough, and Pochita is here to watch things continue happening even when Denji is openly suffering. guess kinda like the audience, in that sense.
